For this particular camera it really is not too difficult. Of course, used ones are available for under $50 or you can get a really good upgrade for under $100 (all US $)
The firmware is at the Kodak website listed under support and downloads, Be sure to get the file for the Z1285 camera and not a wrong one !!! Go to www. kodak.com and click support.
The Kodak Z730 records movies at the following resolution and frame rates 640 x 480, 12 fps, 320 x 240, 20 fps while the Z1285 records movies at the following resolution and frame rates 1280 x 720, 640 x 480, 320 x 240, 30 fps therefore you cannot view the Z730 movies on the Z1285 and vice versa.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Are you using the batteries listed as compatible according to the cameras battery door? Or are you using NON-compatible Alkaline or Ni-Cad batteries? Only Li-Ion and Ni-MH are compatible. Hope this helps...
