Jaguar X-Type cam belt

Hi,
I'm about to buy Jaguar X-Type SE 3.0 2002(02). My only concern is how often its cam belt (timing belt?) has to be changed (if there is such thing in this car at all)?

These are chain driven. The only issue I have seen with these are the chain tensioners breaking. Generaly with chain driven engines, the chain will last the life of the vehicle, unless something like the tensioner or guide brakes. If it does break repairs can be fairly expensive.

Cam belt are meant to be changed every 50,000 miles but I am not aware if it does use one unfortunately.

  • JEFF PALMER Nov 25, 2012

REALLY? BELTS ARE RECOMENDED BEING REPLACED AT 50,000 MILES? I WAS SURE IT AVERAGES OUT ACROSS THE BOARD AT 100K FOR ALL AUTO MAKERS. CHECK YOUR MATINENCE SCHEDULE USUALLY FOUND IN THE GLOVE BOX OF YOUR VEHICLE. . THIS JAG IN QUESTION IS IN FACT CHAIN DRIVEN RATHER THAN USING A RUBBER BELT. IF PROPERLY SERVICED AND MAINTAINED , THE CHAIN IS DESIGNED TO LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE DEPENDS ON HOW WELL ITS OWNER TAKES CARE OF IT.

At what milage does the cam belt need changing

The ideal time is 75,000 miles. I see owner delay the change up to 120,000 miles. (not recommended)
Timing belt, water pump and tensioner should be change at the same time.

Jaguar xj 40 sovereign 1994 error code 17

I'm not a Jag expert, but error code 17 is:
P0017 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B)
Additional infomation on and cause and possible solutions are here:
http://www.obd-codes.com/p0016
Basically, it looks like you have timing issue. Could be the cam or crank sensor or the timing belt.
The P0017 code would imply that you have at least two cam sensors (V6 or V8). The computer thinks that the B sensor cam is out of time with the other cam and the crankshaft. Depending on the cost and location, you might try changing the cam sensor first. The cost to check or replace the timing belt is probably going to be painful.

I have a jaguar s type 2.7 turbo diesel 06 plate can any one tell me if it has a cam belt or chain if belt when should it be changed. thanks

Well after digging up a few web sites, I found both references to the chain and the belt. I'll let you look at the one above and try to figure it out. If it is a belt, 60,000 miles. If it is a chain, then never. Hope this helps.

Suggestion for 2003 Jaguar X type and 1999 A6 Audi

Was looking at parts online and could not find a timing belt for the Jag. Did find the timing cover oil seal which makes me think it has a chain , not a belt so no worries. As always I could be wrong. The audi definitely has a belt , should be changed at 60,000 Miles / 100,000 Km. I have a passat with the 2.8 V6 and find performance is not great , nor is fuel economy.
The good and bad......... jag is newer , audi is lower mileage Both are slightly finicky and repair and maint would be more $$$ than more generic cars. Ignore carfax , it is an unreliable scam.
Take each to a mechanic of your choice for an inspection.
My personal opinion is it comes down to age. If you are over 45 go with the Jag , under 45 go with the audi. (lots of performance and apearance mods avail.)
