Onkyo TX-DS 595 receiver surround channel unrealiable

Recently (yesterday) I noticed that my Onkyo TX-DS 595 right surround channel was silent when running the channel test. Switched speakers and verified that the speaker itself worked. Then the right channel started to give sound when I increased the master volume up to around 30. The right channel continues to work for a while but when I lower the volume and re-run the channel test after a while it sometimes is silent. Almost like I have to feed it a reasonably high level of power to get it working for a while.

The last two years I haven't used the surround and center speakers, but now we moved and I put everything up again. Didn't think these things should be affected by age.

Also for the last couple of weeks I have put the receiver and the rest of the gear to stand-by and then unplugged everything from the wall outlet without shutting off the main power of the receiver, could that have hurt it?

How you power off the amp won't hurt it generally. I used to fix ONKYO amps under warranty, and I can tell you now, it will be full of dry solder joints. Take you unit to your local repairer, and they will resolder all the offending PCB's inside. This type of repair will fix 99% of strange audio noises and cutting in and out etc. for ONKYO recievers. Otherwise this is quite a good product.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the advice! I'm going back to the shop where I bought it seven years ago to see if there are any reasonably priced repair options."

7.1 would have Surround Back L and R.

6.1 would have just one back there (SB). It defaults to the Left output on the Pre-Outs if you ever go that route.

This being a 6.1 receiver it does not support two SB channels BUT you can configure those amp channels for a separate Zone supporting 2 speakers. Confused?

The manual shows a single SB speaker connected to the left side on Page 27. THAT would be consistent with a 6.1 configuration.

Surround mode is set to OFF

I was able to solve this problem by using the "A" speaker jacks and eventually I pushed the right buttons to get the Surround mode to turn ON. I believe it was when I hit the Parameter Selection button that allowed the surround mode to become active.

Speaker is not detected

If you are connecting a 5.1 surrround sound rather than 7.1, have you connected the surround speakers to the surround left and surround right rather than surround back left and surround back right?

Hi there. If you are running a 5.1 speaker system, make sure your surround speakers are on the surround terminal NOT ON THE SURROUND BACK. the surround back is only for the 7.1 speaker system.

Left Surround Channel

Try to tighten the screws at the back where you insert your A/V jacks.

Thanks!
