Hi a6291,
Your need to post back the model number of your presario, there must be 2000 different presario's out there. Typically, you need to take off the back panel, and then just two screws, but I won't know where the two screws are located until I know the model.
Thanks
Mark
Hi, a6291,
Ah ha, they screws are under the keyboard.
All parts have to be removed prior to getting to those two screws. Here is a disasmbly chart:
Here's the instructions:
1. Unplug the AC adapter, if present, and remove the battery.
2. Remove these additional assemblies:
A. Keyboard cover (Which consist of Speaker assembly and the Switchboard PCA)
1. Remove the two M2.5×4.0 mm hinge cover screws that secure the keyboard cover to the rear of the notebook.
2.Carefully insert a flat-blade screwdriver blade under the keyboard cover near the right end, then near the center, then near the left end, and then gently lift up the center of the cover. Gently pry up the hinge covers if needed, being careful not to damage the plastics or wireless antenna underneath.
Caution:
Be careful not to damage the antenna PCA that is connected to the left and right display assembly hinges. Damaging either antenna PCA can degrade notebook performance.
3. If necessary, while holding the center of the cover, carefully insert the flat-blade screwdriver under the right side of the display assembly hinge, gently pry up, and then lift the cover out. This procedure might need to be repeated on the left side of display assembly hinge to completely remove the cover.
4. Disconnect the Speaker Cable
Reassembly Note
• Insert the tabs on the left- and right-center of the panel into the mating slots under the keyboard, and then press the panel into place.
B. Removing the Speaker Assembly
1. Remove the M2.5×6.0 mm screw that secures the speaker assembly to the top case.
2. Disconnect the 4-wire cable from the switchboard PCA.
C. Remove the Keyboard
1. Remove the four M2.5×4.0 mm screws that secure the keyboard to the top case.
2. Lift up on the keyboard at the switchboard PCA end and then pull it toward the display assembly to release the tabs from the top case.
3. Turn the keyboard over and disconnect the motherboard cable.
4. Remove the keyboard.
3. Remove the two M2.5×6.0 mm screws that secure the CD/DVD drive to the top case and motherboard.
4.Place your index finger in the top case opening and push out on the CD/DVD drive to release it from the motherboard.
5. Finally, Remove the CD/DVD drive
.
I hope this does the trick for you. It should. Let me know if you have any problems
Good Luck,
Mark

There is a trick to it, you have to pull it just right to get it out because they actually lock in pretty good.....Mine is a hot swap so the drive pulls out without removing any screws to insert say a floppy drive. I use my nails (all 4 at the same time, put your hand like you are making a fist and use your thumb to push off the laptop) and pull it by the lip on the edge of the drive while having my thumb as leverage. Make sure to put your fingers on the metal part an not the plastic drive door cover will easily pop off and break.... Others have a lock lever you have to hold down/slid over while pulling the drive out..
There is 1 lock system bottom of dvd drive.
Open that lock then pull dvd drive then you can deattach it from laptop.
Also check there is not any disturbense between dvd drive and laptop cover.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks.
There are a couple of screws you can't get to unless the drawer is open. You can open it if you use a paperclip and insert it into the small hole that is on the face of the drawer. Also, If I remember this model correctly, you will need to remove the motherboard so you can access the side screws on the mounting brackets. These are located on the top portion of the motherboard. They did not make replacing this device easy. Having done this repair myself on a Presario Laptop I feel your pain. Good Luck.
There is one or 2 screws under the hard drive as well as the screw that retains the hard drive. There are also 4 screws under the battery and 2 on the backside where the external videos and mouse connectors are at. If the top and bottom halves feel like they are hanging they are. Make sure you have removed the top plastic cover over the keyboard top half and removed the screws that hold the keyboard in place as well as the screw(s) that hold it together from there. There are 2 screws that can only be accessed with the CD drive drawer open. If you haven't gotten to these you will need to remove them or it will never come out. They did not make replacing this item very user friendly.

Regular maintenance of your Compaq Presario laptop helps to keep the machine running properly.
Keeping the fans clean is especially important, because the fans blow out hot air and bring in fresh air to cool down the laptop.
Fans attract dust, however, which can slow them down, resulting in a hot laptop.
If the laptop overheats, vital parts can cease functioning altogether.
Consequently, keeping your laptop's fans clean is crucial.
or Remove an HP Presario C500 Fan Assembly to clean it
HP Presario C500 is a laptop that, like most other laptops, requires a clean, functioning fan in order to work properly.
If your fan is too full of dust to function properly or needs to be replaced because it is no longer working, then your computer could be in danger of overheating and crashing.
Instead of having to purchase a new laptop because your C500's fan has failed, remove it and clean the fan or replace it with a new one.
Turn off your computer and unplug all the cords and cables from it, even the power cable.
Turn the laptop over and remove the battery, then remove all the screws at the bottom of the computer with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
Remove the two face plates from the bottom of the computer and you'll see the hard drive and RAM below.
The face plates will come out easily once the screws are removed.
Remove the two screws holding the hard drive in place and then lift the hard drive out.
Remove the screw found directly below the hard drive.
Turn the laptop over again and pop off the keyboard.
If all the screws at the bottom of the computer where removed, then the keyboard will come right out.
Remove all the screws underneath the keyboard and case and then lift the case enough to access the fan assembly in your HP Presario C500.
Unhook the cable coming from the fan into the motherboard and remove the screws holding the fan in place, then pop the fan out of the computer.
Hope this helps

do i get to the lock from outside the computer or do i need to go inside?
what would the lock look like?
haven't been able to locate a lock and will try agian to go inside. all the screws are loose, but still can't open the case. any ideas? thanks.
need to get inside my compaq presario 2500. all the screws are loose, but it seems to be held up on the hard drive side. any suggestions?
my drive refuses to come out even with mechanical assist. will need to open it up. all the screws on the bottom of the case are loose, but it hangs up on opposite corners. ????
fyi, i have an 04 f350 diesel dually. ;-)
there are two screws holing the dvd drive in. unfortunately i see the wrong side of them. it is advertised as a presario 2500, but the back says it is a 2568cl. i really, really hope this helps. i can get two corners up, but nothing more. i believe the hard drive may be stopping something. i have thought about trying to remove the two screws from my side and hoping for the best retrieving them. i had the thing open enough to get the part number off it so i can order a new drive, but, of course, i still need to get those screws out. thanks.
Whew. Piece of cake. You da man. Now all I have to do is find the correct replacement. Thanks, Allen
Great job! Just wish I'd heard from him first. After I got the correct info, it took only 20 minutes or so.
