My kenmore 80 series washer ... the tub has stopped spinning although it still sounds as if something is spinning inside the tub isnt moving....does this mean it needs a coupling?

It's normal to hear some water in tub, it isn't normal for the rubber wheel to be hard to turn, you need to replace the pump, they are much cheaper on ebay
most common problem is either the lid switch (made no sound) or the drive coupler(sounds like its working but no spin) also check for anything holding tub(nail trough basket jamming tub etc.)
it could be the direct drive coupling that connects the motor to the transmission. fill it up with water and see if it will agitate, if it will NOT agitate then it is a good chance that this is the problem.
worse case scenario is the transmission is bad, but this is unlikely.
The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.
