Depending on the make and model they make kits for it. You would need a recoil system, rope, etc. It is not a five minute job but if you had all of the right parts a expierienced mechanic could do it in a day.

No, the compression on an engine that big would be to hard to turn with a cord start. I have seen people start engines using an impact driver or electric drill on the crankshaft nut.
pull the starter and have it bench tested
it appears to drawing excessive current and removing power from the ignition circuit
pulling on the cord doesn't have that current draw so it starts easily
have the battery load tested as it may not be capable of running starter and ignition
Electrical doesn't affect the engine mechanically. Besides making it run rough or shutting it down. Engine mechanical does affect the electronics though. Sounds like you have an electrical problem that needs attention. Also sounds like you have an engine that just threw rod/main bearings. At 4500 miles, I hope you have a warranty on this engine.
leave all the battery connections connected, then prime the carb, and pull to start, i have a quad with an electric start and a pull start, it will not start with the pull cord if the battery is not connected.
I have seen Inteck engines to be very sensitive to valve clearance. IF it is a few years old try adjusting the valve clearance exactly as shown in the manual. The electric starter may give it just enough kick to make the difference.
If the pull start works, but the electric start doesn't try the following. Either give the battery on the generator a full charge, and if after a full charge it doesn't start, get a new battery.

When using the battery , there is insufficient power left to run the ignition system
when pull starting what is in the battery is sufficient to start the engine
pull spark plugs and see if it will pull over if not fuel may have filled the crank case drain & refill to proper level (starter is stuck in lube shaft & movethe gear up & down by hand to free up)
