Cannot Set Password on DI524 Wireless Router

I have a Dlink DI524 wireless router connected to a mac (OSX 10.4.11). I want to limit access to my wireless router, so I tried to set up a password by doing the following:  1. I go to 192.168.0.1, click on "Home" and "Wireless"  2. I set "Security" to WEP  3. I set "WEP Encryption" to 128Bit and Key Type to ASCII.  4. I click on Key1" and provide a 13 letter password, but when I click "apply" nothing happens and the Security status reverts to "disabled".   My computer is set to PPPoE and does connect to the internet. Any ideas on how I can successfully enable a password for my router? Thanks.

I was given a dlink dir 625 router with no installation cd or manual. how can i set it up and make it secure?

Get the install wizard from http://www.dlink.com/support/, but here are the highlights of what needs to be set:

Wireless Router settings:

It is usually easiest to run the install wizard, which you can get from the manufacturers' website, usually for free, but be sure to be ready to set the items listed below:

To get access, start your browser, and put 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, or other address for your unit, into the ADDRESS bar (not search box) of your Internet Browser. Every unit has unique access login and passwords, some are admin with no password, some are admin and admin...seek access information from the website of the manufacturer of your unit. Look under support, downloads, drivers or similar sounding areas.

Things to set:

(Note: Routers are intended to be set by geeks. You have to SAVE EVERY page before you leave it, or the changes will be lost. A geek knows this (apparently). The router gives no protest...just dumps your changes. SAVE OFTEN.)

1. Login password (RECORD THIS!!). Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is typically NOT the security issue.

2. Set a recognizable system ID (descriptive name is easier to find when you need to connect wirelessly).

3. Invoke wireless security of at least WEP.

a. Assign your own access code, 10 digit home or cell #. Consider taping this information to bottom of the router. (Physical access is usually not the security issue.)

4. Check that your router is set to broadcast its' presence.

5. Change the channel of the wireless to 11, and avoid conflict with landline cordless phones. (Big issue, even the neighbors can interrupt).

There are more secure settings available, all the way down to only allowing certain MAC addresses to have access. A MAC address is a digit unique to each and every network card. Like a fingerprint. Most users do not set mac address limits.

Forgot my DI 524 setup password, pushed RESET button, what next?

You will need to login as admin and set it up again. Connect per ethernet cable, open a browser and enter 192.168.0.1 You should see a router welcome screen or logon dialog login as admin the default password maybe one of several things depending on the particular revision/edition blank/null 'admin' 'password'
Support for this model is available at http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DI-524&tab=3 manual at ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/di524/Manual/DI-524_manual_06292005.zip
Once you're in you will have to set up an ISP connection which may require your ISP username / password and selecting a protocol particular to your ISP and setting up the wireless WEP key

My laptop cannot hookup to the enternet with my dlink wireless card

To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router’s wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router’s wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.
To access the Internet you need to connect the DSL or cable modem to the WAN (Internet) port on the wireless router.

Secure dlink di 524 with wireless connection.

One of your neighbors may have changed it for you, but you have the hardware, just reset it, and get a LONG cable to it, as you only get problems trying to set the Router with the wireless connection.
After resetting to factory default,
Change admin password
Set wireless security:
Wikreless/Wireless MAC filter.
- here you allow witch MAC address is allowed to access your network.
you find your own MAC address by typing ipconfig /all in a cmd.

Can not get security for dlink

You may need to access your router setup page to verify the wireless settings in the router. Using a computer that is wired to the router, open up IE and type 192.168.0.1, that is the default IP address of your router. Then, a window will open asking for a username password. The username by default is admin. Just leave the password field empty.

Once you're in the setup page, click on WIRELESS tab which on the left side of the page. On the Wireless page, you will see the wireless settings set in the router. You may also enable the wireless security on that page if there is not security enabled yet.

Please check this for your reference http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/di524/h_wireless.html

Hope this helps!

Everything is working very well on my di524

Hi,

To my knowledge, the only password that could be set/changed is when you log into to your DI524 web configuration page. Once the WiFi router is setup and running, you can also changed. There is no password required for your wireless clients (users). There is however a provision for Security key which could be WEP, WPA or WPA-PSK. All of these could be accessed upon entry to the web configuration page of the DLink DI-524.

This page is an emulator that can help you be familiar how things are done to configure your WiFi router.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
