Just by what you explained I can tell that it needs to be replaced. The belt doesn't have to be broken to need replacing, if it is stretched and worn then it will slip on the motor shaft and not turn the brush roll and get hot. Make sure it is not the electrical outlet that has tripped. If not then you basically have 3 choices. Cord, switch, motor. A service tech. should be able to diagnose.
Applied the electrical tape to the motor shaft as suggested by another poster. The tape ripped off, but the sticky residue left provides enough friction to grab the belt and cause the beter brush to turn correctly. Thanks
