The message contact support does not mean there is any fault in the system . You need to contact your service provider customer care department.
Service provider means sim brand for example t mobile, vodafone,etc etc...
Please contact their customer care department over phone or just walk in to their nearest retail outlet..

if it says "contact support" restoring it will not work anymore. listen to the zune's hard drive. if it spins but makes a repeittive noise, the HDD is broken. if it doesn't spin at all either the hard drive of the motherboard may be broken. on the 80gb zune it's usually the logic board or the hard drive cable that causes this. there is a zune repair tutorial online gives you an idea on how to do the replacement yourself. parts are on ebay.

I know hoe u can fix it up but itll erase everything first.
1. hold the back and up key to restart.
2. after the zune logo goes off, hold the back, center and play button all together. it'll display code three, dont release yet. keep holding till it goes i think code 1 or 2. asking u to connect to pc. then do it.
3. update the software and ur good to go.

i called microsoft when this happened and this ***** told me i need to pay 150 bux to get a new one. thats bull since ive been down with zune since gen 1

It's a fatal error and they want to fix it.
If you want to try to fix it (when you do things like this you can mess up and brick your zune but if you follow directions you should be fine) enter recovery mode and restore from scratch. You will lose everything on the zune including firmware but it will restore from the computer and should work regardless of what the issue is. When it restores it will reinstall your firmware apps music anything synced. It is a very common fix on iphones (called dfu mode). I would need the model of your zune to tell you specific instructions but look up how to enter recovery mode (or how to reset) for zune in youtube with your model and it should have someone showing you how. I want to start over with my Zune Model 1089. I want to clear everything off of it and start over. Please help....

1. Slide the "hold" switch so that it is in the unlocked position. 2. Press the "Back" button and the top of the Zune pad at the same time and hold until the device resets and begins to power up. Release the buttons when the Zune starts to power on. 3. Immediately press and hold the "Back" button and both the left side and the center of the Zune pad and continue to hold until the Zune restarts. The phrase "Please Wait" will appear on the LCD screen. Release the buttons.
4.Let the Zune continue resetting. It will clear the contents and eventually display "Connect Zune to your PC" when it is ready.
5. Connect the Zune to your PC via the sync cable. Follow the prompts given by the Zune software to completely restore the Zune device to the factory settings. If you have downloaded newer Zune firmware, you have the option to restore the Zune firmware with the latest version.

How to restore your Zune device software:------------
When you restore your Zune device software, the startup partition and the data partition are removed and rebuilt. In addition to removing the Zune device software, this process also erases all audio, videos, podcasts, and pictures that are stored on the Zune device.
Warning To restore the Zune device software, you must have a Windows-based computer that has an Internet connection. That computer must have the Zune software installed. And you must be able to connect the Zune device to a USB port on that computer by using a Zune Sync Cable. Do not perform the following steps if you do not have any one or more of these things immediately available.

After you start to restore the Zune device software, you cannot again use the device until you complete all the steps. You will not receive any confirmation or warning on the Zune device after you start the following procedure.

To restore the Zune device software, follow these steps:
1. Set the Hold Switch to unlocked.
2. Press and hold the Back button at the same time as you press and hold the top of the Zune Pad. When the Zune device begins to power up, release the buttons.
3. Immediately after you release the buttons in step 2, press and hold the following special button combination, depending on your Zune model:• If you have the 4GB Zune, the 8GB Zune, or the 80GB Zune, immediately press and hold the Back button at the same time as you press both the left side of the Zune Pad and the Play/Pause button. CONTACT SUPPORT*5 .Does it refer to faulty HARD drive or software imcompTIBILITY OR COMMUNICATION PROBLEM

I think Microsoft is playing a "money" trick (which I will explain in a few minutes) on all Zune owners. I have a Zune 120gb unit and it say "contact support" with a number "5" on the screen. This screen popped up after the Zune software claimed I needed to update the software for the Zune unit to be able to play. So I did. Shortly after, the message "contact support" popped up and rendered the Zune useless. My wife contacted Zune support and spent a better part of an hour speaking with a customer service agent, his supervisor and a manager with the end result being that I would have to pay ($169.00 -US Dollars after paying $250 for the unit) to get it serviced.
I find it suspicious that after the software update, the Zune went kaput. Now I have a $250 paperweight. I should mail it back to Microsoft and write them a note asking them to take a look at the Domino Pizza commercial where the man (I imagine he's a manager) sees the picture of the pizza toppings sticking to the roof of the box and saying this is unacceptable. This will be the first and last time I will be purchasing anything from Microsoft. Lesson learned.
I've read quite a few posts where other Zune owners are experiencing the same thing. Weird and coincidental at the same time. Didn't Microsoft get sued a few years ago for trying to monopolize the computer industry? Hmm. I get the feeling you cannot trust this company.

Zune freezes and says contact support

in order to fix this . you have to restart the device. to restart the device you press and hold back while also pressing and holding the top part of the zune pad until screen goes blank and zune logo appears this should work. if contact support comes back up try restoreing the device.
