Hi,

i had two c640 with the same problem..
there is just one solution..
you have to replace an ic chip..
this one is getting to hot.
it's the 45 chip.
underneath the motherboard.
yep, you have to take your lap apart
it's a maxim chip..
i did that , replaced the chip with a defect c610 maxim chip and now the 2 c640's are in the air for mionhs now..

good luck

have a look a www.asklaptopfreak.com for the details

Sounds like a motherboard port. remove the battery and try to power it on again with the AC adapter. If same issue, try another AC adapter, try removing the hard disk and DVD drive if available, and test it again.. If no luck, request for a motherboard replacement if within warranty, otherwise, you will have to contact their sales support to purchase a replacement board

Hi there,

Follow the below steps it would fix your issue.

Method 1: First you need to try safe mode and check if you are able to boot to the desktop.
Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safe mode.
Advanced startup options including safe mode
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode
Method 2:
If you are able to boot into safe mode then in order to troubleshoot this issue further, you may unplug all the external devices except keyboard and mouse and check if you are able to boot to the desktop.

Method 3: If the above provided steps don't resolve the issue then, I would recommend you perform startup repair.
Follow these steps:

To perform a Startup Repair follow the steps below:

a. Please insert the Windows 7 DVD and reboot the computer.
b. When we are prompted to press a key to boot from the DVD, please press Enter or the space bar.
c. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
d. Click Repair your computer.
e. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
f. On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

Screen goes black. the power light is on, but the picture goes out. if i turn the power off, then on again it comes back for about 5 seconds, then goes black again.

Check to see if this problem follows in safe mode. Reboot and when the Dell splash screen comes up tap F8 until you see the multiboot options. Scroll to "safe Mode with Networking" let the machine boot up and see if you have a screen. If you do, right click on the desktop and set the resolution to 800 X600 and reboot normally. Usually when a screen goes blank in normal mode but shows up in safe mode means you have an incompatible resolution for the monitor or graphics adapter. This may be a driver issue or hardware. If the screen boots up in normal mode at the lower resolution, then try and go to properties again and bump the resolution up a bit, if it blanks again, try to go online and update the driver for the graphics chip.

Booting problem

Try putting the computer into safe mode by holding down on the F8 button and selecting safe mode during the boot process. Once you get to the safe mode screen and windows appears, restart the computer.

If that doesn't fix the problem you will have to restore Windows.
