The bin stinks like mold

Only had this machine 2 years and especially towels really smell badly of mold, the drawer also becomes black with mold after a while. I've tried to change detergents and softeners but nothing seems to help. Help! Melanie

The tray gets black and I have taken it out and washed it in the dishwasher. I have also ran a cycle of apple vineger. I had a tech that came out to work on the dryer tell me it was because I was not always using HE washing liquid-- but I am. It does still stink, you can smell it as soon as you open the door to the laundry room.

Hi! I have Kenmore Elite 4t and had this same problem: Musty, Moldy smell in washer and on clothes. The Sears Technician suggested that I use a half a cup of Clorox Liquid Bleach and put it in the tub (not the dispenser). NO CLOTHES! Use the longest hottest setting and when it's done clean the inside (underneath rubber tire thingie) and the undernath part of the door with a papertowel. And to always leave the door open. I did what he said with the bleach and it worked. I didn't want to leave the door open because I have 2 cats & was afraid that they would want to go in it, but ended up repeating the bleach thing again because a few days later the horrible smell was back. I leave the door open all the time now and the cats never go in it. They've watched laundry spin around, so I guess they're smart enough to not want to go in it. I have not had this problem again since I always leave the door open and I did this over a month ago. I hope this helps!

Have had machine for 6 years.  Mold is an issue.  Occatioinally I clean out the drawer and behind the grey rubber seal with vinegar.  After a load is washed, I dry off seal and leave door slightly open.  Occationally I also wash a load of nothing but bleach.   Hope this helps.

Chances are there is mold forming in the outer tub, put two cups of bleach in the tub, set the water level at highest setting and run it in heavy wash mode. Do not add any laundry, that should help kill the mold that is causing the smell.

Towel mildew smell is being transferred from the washer. The washer must be cleaned first. The problem is not "brand specific" all clothes washers have mold growth to a certain degree. Bleach or vinegar will kill the mold inside your washer but won't remove it or the residue it grows on thereby making the situation worse because it leaves a "base" for more detergent to collect on and more mold will grow.

Washing machine mold / mildew odor is caused by:
#1 cause is overuse of detergents. Detergent companies are notorious for instructing to use too much detergent. Especially with soft water or when using liquid detergent no more than 1 tbsp of any detergent should be used.
#2 most common cause is using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle and will coat the inside of the outer tub with residue that is a food source for mold to grow.
#3 using only cold water for washing is fine but makes preventative maintenance very important. A weekly hot soak will dissolve odor-causing residue from inside your washer.
#4 not using the washer. If the clothes washer isn't used very often maintenance is especially important. If leaving for a vacation it's a good idea to clean your washer. Do a search to "remove washer odor" to read just how big the problem is. There are all natural washer cleaners that will also remove mildew odor from towels and clothing after the washer has been cleaned.

Musty smell especially in towels

Once towels have had mold grow on them, it's unlikely you will ever get rid of that smell. You can usually tell a towel has had mold grow by discolorations on solid color towels. You probably need to start over with new towels, make sure they are washed and dried frequently and that they don't stay damp for long after showering. If you live in a humid climate, a towel warming rack will help with drying.

Washer stinks - smells like mold or mildew

You have to kill the mold. To do that mix one cup of clorox liquid bleach into one quart of water and wipe all aroung the rubber. Let it dry and do it again. That will solve your problem

Mold & Smelly in Washer

Wash on hottest and longest cycle with regular laundry soap and a bottle of vinegar. After cycle, wash again with soap on hottest/longest cycle. This will clean your washer like new.

Mold & Smelly in Washer

Thanks for your suggestion about looking in the lip of the seal. I found one of my three year old granddaughters socks. Also, the seal for very dirty so I mixed a 50% solution and 50% solution of chlorox and used an old towel rag to wipe and wash throughly around the lip seal.

I noted that the aluminum ring inside the washer had also accumulated a lot of dirt. With one hand and fingers I held the wet cholorx towel inside the ring and with the other hand spun the tub around several turns until I had removed all the dirt and grime.

It did have a moldy smell. I'll let you know if this fixed the problem.

Clothes smell.

Mold, mildew and other fun things use washers as a breeding ground. Clean your machine with a generous amount of white vinegar run through a cycle. Or there is a product called Affresh you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot.

Mold & Smelly in Washer

Shepherd, Finkelman, Miller & Shah, LLC, is currently investigating defects and other problems in certain front-loading washing machines manufactured and/or sold by Whirlpool, Kenmore, and LG Electronics, including Kenmore Elite HE3 front load washers, Whirlpool Duet front load washers and LG Tromm, LG XL and other LG model front load washers, which result in the growth of mold/mildew in the machines and which can cause the staining of clothes and other problems.

On August 29, 2007, SFMS filed a Complaint against Sears Holding Corp. involving its Kenmore HE, HE2, HE3, HE4, HE5 and other front-loading automatic washers. If you own a front-loading washing machine that is manufactured by any of the above-mentioned companies and are experiencing the growth of mold/mildew in the machine, visit the following website: www.frontloadwasherclassaction.com
