The shutter could be stuck or the mirror could be stuck. (Guessing you have an SLR.)
The film advancing is normal; means it is cocked and ready to go but something is stuck.

Take off the lens and see if anything is keeping the mirrors/shutters from returning.

Everything seems to function well, actually, I've never used this camera. Got if off of ebay, so maybe I was gypped. Anyways, the film advance lever seems to be stuck. It only goes half way. I can put...

If the lever won't advance even when there is no film in the camera, then I would say there is a problem. (p.s. You haven't told us the make and model)

How to open a Vivitar 845 camera?

On the back of the camera, there are two sliders. The left hand one is the battery cover, and the other is the film back release.camera03a.jpg
Film advance is automatic when batteries are in it.

If this picture doesn't come out clearly, look at the ebay listing I copied it from ....

Screen is black and film won't load

If it's a 35mm film camera and you see nothing through the viewfinder, then as long as the lens cap has been removed, your camera has a locked up mirror.

You don't give any clues which exact model you have, but if it's one of the later electronic autofocus models with automatic film advance then the additional detail that the film isn't loading confirms that your camera simply has no power. Replace the batteries and all should be well.

If your camera does not have automatic film advance then you still almost certainly have flat batteries and just need to learn how to correctly load and wind the film.

Camera took pictures to # 7, then the 7 just blinks off and on, then won't do anything else. I put in new batteries, thinking that might be problem. It isn't/ what to do????

Likely its the film tranport motor. If that goes out, the camera cannot advance film. Try rewinding film. I forget if the 7000 had 1 or 2 such motors. Could also be teeth broken/worn out on the gears, but sounds like a trip to the repair shop is in order. If it will not rewind, put the camera inside a zipped dark jacket. Fold the bottom of the jacket to block light. Put your arms in the sleeves and open the camera back. Pull out the film, rewind it into the can.

Takes a picture when film advance lever is moved

The magnets that control the shutter are the likely suspect. Dirt and debris can cause them not to hold properly. Hence, it fires the shutter when you advance the film. It is something you can repair yourself. I can describe the procedure if you are interested.

Pentax zx 50 35mm slr

Others here have suggested the problem lays with the plastic gear on the advancing motor beside the mirror.

This might cost $100 or so...?
