Tonight the rollerball on my Blackberry Pearl will not work in the upward direction; only the downward direction. Is this something I can fix or is this a hardware problem?
RIM will admit, its a known issue with the blackberry 8100...it was the first blackberry with a front trackball and so there is a design flaw that dust will get in here and prevent the magnets from moving around inside.
the little silver rim is acutally designed to be taken off so you can clean inside. take an embrodery needle, and put it under the silver rim by the TY button on the keypad....once this pops off, there is the ball and there are 2 more silver rims inside along with 4 magnets. remember how you take this apart, cause if you dont, then this will void any warrenty your phone might have.
in order to clean this, soak the ball in rubbing alchohol and take a cotten ended Q-tip with rubbing alchohol and damp it a little bit and clean it real well.....its also nice preventative doing this regularly...,. (not taking the ball out, but just cleaning the rim and ball about once every other day or so....)
The silver ring which covers the trackball can easily be removed if you use a small screwdriver to lift it at the outer side of the ring. Be careful here! Like you should be during the whole process as all parts have very small plastic nipple which can break very easy. When the silver plastic ring is removed you will see the inner trackball component which can be removed completely. Before doing this you should carefully remove the silver metal ring that holds the trackball component in its position. The trackball component itself can also be carved. For every direction the ball can roll to you’ll find a sensor wheel. Those wheels are mostly carrying some gunk you should clean them from. Once this is done put everything back together to the place the pieces came from and secure the trackball with the silver plastic ring you removed in the first step. Your BlackBerry’s trackball should be back working now.
There are pictures of how to do this on "other" forums.

Mine was Blackberry 8820.
It's been a while that I was not able to move upward using my rollerball. Today was the final straw and I was especially frustrated when the provider "TMOBILE" does nothing to help. I snapped open the silver ring that goes around the rollerball using a small sharp steak knife. Basically applying a little pressure after putting the tip of the knife underneath the silver oval. Inside it is the rollerball and the rest of the stuff that connects to it. I used Dust Off air blaster and blow the bottom of the rollerball, as well as the rest of the removed pieces. Next, i dipped all the removed pieces into several teaspoons of water (w/ a tiny bit of soap), and brushed it gently with an old toothbrush. When done, I use Dust Off to blow as much liquid off as possible, and then let it sit for 5 minute. Then I popped both pieces back on the phone, and it worked like new. I'm in heaven now. Do it now if you're having a problem. I'm glad I did.
My blackberry has a mind of its own. itis opening up programs on it's own. it makes calls and sends text messages before i can finish.
A rollerball is also known as trackball or trkball, when I had a problem with mien I only used some "air spray" (like the one you buy when you clean your keyboard) and just clean the the trackball, while you at it, i recommend you clean the Blackberry keyboard also .
Dai thoma mobila thooki thanilla poodu roll ball work aagum(that means through your mobile in a water)
The only way to fully get it up and running again is physically remove andclean (with alcohol) or replace the part. If you want somebody else to do it for you, goto Blackberry Trackball. If you want to do it yourself, here is a Blackberry Repair Guide that shows how, the part is available on Ebay.

I had the same problem and it needs to be cleaned. I would suggest going to your service provider or giving RIM a call to find out the best way to clean it. I removed mine and cleaned it but ended up losing one of the little magnetic roller pins and will now be purchasing a new trackball.

Today the rollerball on my Blackberry is not effectively working in a downward direction. When i get home later i will try to take the silver rim off and clean the ball but it seems like a potentially risky process if i do it wrong! Is there any other solution to this problem??
my roller ball will not roll downward
Similar problem. Up and down is ok but the track ball won't move the curser right or left.
The rollerball in my blackberry pearl 8100 moves eratically. mostly moving laterally. No up or down movement at all
My rollerball would only operate vertically and I followed the soultion offered above but didn't have rubbing alcohol so used fingernail polish remover and fixed it! Thanks!!!
My BB roller ball won't scroll up. This has happened before but it seemed to spontaneously start up again hours later without my intervention.
It doesn't seem to be gunked up with dirt or dust but certainly could be considering the abuse to which I subject it. (I'd keep it in a case but then can't hear it ring no matter how I adjust the volume).
Please help me.
Thank you.
