I cant find syntax's website to download a flashing utility and the bios image.

Your problem is all about your motherboard you need to updated to BIOS firmware to solve your problem.

Go to the gigabyte website then go to your motherboard page and download and updated to the latest firmware for your bios.

You can get the BIOS flash utility at the Gigabyte website. As far as the actual flashing is concerned, it is a fairly simple and straight forward process. The specifics will depend on the utility that you download. You will need TWO things. The flash utility and the firmware you wish to install. Just a bit of warning, improper flashing of the mobo's BIOS can lead to catastrophic failure of the motherboard, so take care and follow the instructions to the letter.

Well if you have two optical drives, it's easy. You can simply download the FreeDOS LiveCD (base image) from http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-...0/fdbasecd.iso and burn that to a CD. You can then burn the BIOS flashing utility and the BIOS image from your motherboard website to another disc, boot up your box, change to the second drive, and run the utility

But what if you don't have two optical drives? Or what if you don't have ANY optical drives? I found myself in this situation recently. I was working on an appliance that had only a compact flash (CF) boot slot, and a few USB ports. It lacked not only an optical drive but also a hard drive, and I needed to flash the BIOS to current.

I did the usual Googling and found lots of outdated articles, none of which adequately explained how to make a USB key boot DOS, although I did piece together enough clues to figure it out with some experimentation.

You'll need a few things to make a DOS bootable USB thumbdrive with these instructions:

Steps to make your fancy, schmancy DOS booting USB drive:

1.Download and install the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and WinImage

2.Make a directory on your desktop called “DOSBootDisk”

3.Start WinImage and open the fdbasecd.iso file, you will see a directory structure
a.Select Image > Extract and browse to your DOSBootDisk directory
b.Check the “Extract all files into the same folder” and click “OK”
c.When it prompts you if you want to overwrite duplicates, say Yes
d.You can now exit WinImage, you won't need it again

4.Connect your USB flash drive to your machine and backup any files you want to keep (as it will be completely erased in this process)

5.Start the HP Flash Format utility
a.In the first dropdown box, select your flash drive (mine displays as a Corsair 2GB flash drive). Be careful that you have the correct drive as this process will erase your device.
b.Set the File System to FAT
c.If you want, give your system a volume label, for example “BOOTDISK”
d.Check the “Create a DOS startup disk” box
e.Select “Using DOS system files located at:” and browse to your desktop and select your DOSBootDisk you created in step 2.
f.Click Start and say Yes when it warns you about formatting your device
g.Watch the pretty status bar progress
h.Click “Close” when it is done

6.Now open your formatted USB key in Windows Explorer and copy your BIOS flash utility and your BIOS image to your key so they are available once you reboot. Feel free to throw in any other DOS utilities you want... I can't think of any but since you're here you obviously know something about DOS...

7.Shut down Windows XP, reboot your machine, ensure your BIOS is set to support booting from a USB device (this varies by BIOS, ensure both the option is enabled and your USB device is in your boot order about your hard drive and optical drive). Save your changes and exit.

8.You should see your machine boot FreeDOS 1.0 from your USB key.

9.Run the BIOS upgrade utilities you copied to the disk earlier.

Flashing Your BIOS

General Instructions:
Flashing [aka upgrading] your bios should be the last resort to solve a problem. Most people flash to gain the use of larger hard drives although recently, many are flashing to get all the features of XP to work. Other people have to upgrade their bios just to get XP to work properly with some specific hardware.

A couple of items are really important if you decide to flash. First. Make sure the updated bios addresses the issue you are trying to solve. eg many motherboard makers update their bios's for many different reasons. A reason may simply be to get a certain big name brand of pc to work correctly with a new cd writer big brand pc is selling.

So you really have to read the docs so see if the upgrade addresses your specific niggle or concern. Secondly, try your motherboard maker first to see if they have the files you need. Bios's upgrades are best had, if available, from the company that made your motherboard or pc. In most cases these are free.

Thirdly, READ THE DOCS CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THEM TO THE LETTER. Dont skip any steps, especially the backup option if available. Fourth, if the upgrade calls for a clean bootdisk, use one. The disk I made especially for bios flashing is the one you can download above. It's a DrDOS bootdisk with NO drivers loading up in config.sys or autoexec.bat which is very important. My bios flash bootdisk is recommended by the most popular motherboad makers.

If you dont have a 1.44 drive I also created a utility to use to flash from a CD which you can add the new bios and flash utility to and then burn it.

It should have room to add your new bios, the flash utility, and also have room for the backup. If not one can always use another disk for the info. Always use BRAND NEW MEDIA when dealing with flashes.

In order to locate the correct bios upgrade for your motherboard you need to know who made it AND you need to know the model number. If your PC was made locally perhaps you have the manual. If not, then you need to find out the maker and model. Or, and very common with major brands, your computer maker will/may have the updated bios's on their website.

I have one windows and three dos utils that find your motherboard maker and model number. One of them should work for you. The DOS utils are on my DOStools Page under Diagnostics, and are called CTbios, MBID, and HW iNFO. The windows utility is called BIOS Agent and is on my Utilities Page under Hardware .

Once you ID your motherboard and model go the the manufacturers website and see what they have available. Note that some upgrades will come with their own bootdisk/utility so you may not need the disk I made.

Again, note that even tho many people flash their bios regularly to get the latest features and never have a problem, I still recommend it as a last resort as a flash gone bad will make your pc unusable if the backup doesn't work. Look at it this way, suppose I have a used 80 gig drive I want to resuse and my old P400 cant even detect it so I have an unusable pc. This is the best, and most common reason to flash.

On the other hand, if you have a more modern pc that cant see lets say a 180 gig drive and but all else is working properly then you may want to consider a PCI hard drive controller card which has an onboard bios that will see your new large hard drive and also come with 2 more IDE channels you can use in addition to the 2 channels you already have. This is safer than flashing the bios.

The EPA logo and the Fullscreen logo all are stored in the bios. That is the update  you download from the manufacturer's website contains both the logos in it. So if you mod the bios update and then apply the patch the next time when you boot your computer you will see the new logo.

The mods are in two sections.  If you only want one or the other, just skip to that section.

FULLSCREEN LOGO

1. Make Sure the motherboard uses the Award Bios.

2. Either Download the new Bios from the Manufacturer website or get it from the system Bios directly by backing it up.  For backing up and updating bios, I use WinFlash 1.51 (there might be a newer version, I just stick with what works!).

3. Now we have the bios file on disk. Now make a new bitmap image with any of your favorite imaging software. Make sure that the final bitmap image you have created is 640*480 and 256 colors.

4. Now use the CBROM Utility to change the boot logo in the bios file.
This is done by using Command Prompt

c:\bios>CBROM215 bios.bin /logo logo.bmp

5. Now to check whether the bios file was updated correctly. Run the Award bios editor. (make sure the dlls in the plugin directory are moved to the folder with awbedit.exe)

6. Load the bios.bin in the Award bios editor and check in the left hand list for Fullscreen Logo and that it does show your logo.  If okay your bios is now ready to be flashed.

7. Now use Winflash utility, load the bios.bin and click on update .

8. Reboot the computer and the bios logo is changed.


EPA Logo:

Procedure for the EPA logo is just same except the few things.

Image size is : 138*84 16 Colors and 72 pixels/inch

Command for adding to bios file is : c:\bios>CBROM215 bios.bin /epa epalogo.bmp

When you check for the EPA logo in the Award Bios Editor, the colors will not be same as those that you choose but when you flash the bios and reboot, it will show the original colors.


*****PRECAUTIONS*****

Never try to flash bios without a uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
Close all the programs before flashing from Windows.
ALWAYS wait for flash program to notify you for reboot, DO NOT EVER EVER reboot when you think it is ready or taking too long.  Mucking up the flash CAN MAKE YOUR MOTHERBOARD GARBAGE!!!  You have been warned!!

First reboot the computer and enter the bios screen. Disable the bios protect...

Then reboot back into the OS (Presumably windows) and download the bios update from the manufacturer website. It will probably be a zip file containg the bios and the flash utility. Unzip the file and you should have a windows and/or DOS flash utility. If not, the utility should be posted on the website. If the utility is Windows, simpy run the utility. It will ask for the location of your bios file. The update utility will do the rest for you. If the program is DOS, the procedure is similar. Move the utility and bios update into your root directory, reboot, and simpy run the program from the command line.
