Sm_schedule, the side bolts you removed were, in fact, the brush holder caps, and if you remove the brushes, you cut off the power to the electric motor (armature). I suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly. Did you remove the brushes to replace them or were you just inspecting them? I'd suggest removing them again and make sure the concave contact face of the brushes are resting completely on the armature. If you've turned a brush 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly. As far as adjusting the mixer head so that it doesn?t droop, this should be pretty easy to fix if you?ve got a small blade screw driver and a small hex driver (or jewelers screw driver). First, do you still have the KSM90 Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use KSM90P) and select one of the files that appear under Parts List. Turn to page 4 - Case, Gearing and Planetary unit, which shows the exploded view diagram and locate Illus. Nos. 29 & 30. Page 5 lists the parts as Adjusting Screw and Set Screw respectively. What?s probably happened is that over 12 years of operation, the vibrations from your mixer has caused the set screw to loosen and drop, hence the lower mixer head. Both screws will need to be ?adjusted? to move the head back to its original position. Now the problem is removing the head from its pedestal. Turn to page 8 and gently remove Illus. No. 7, Hinge Pin, with a hammer and pin driver. With the hinge pin removed the mixer head and pedestal can be separated and you should have access to adjusting and set screws. I would inspect them for wear and tear, and replace them, if you deem appropriate. It may take a few trial reassemblies to get the mixer head back to the original factory position, but once there, everything should be OK. I hope this helps! Howard, Burke, VA

Here's KA's 'approved' method of adjusting your mixer head clearance:

You don’t say if you have a ‘tilt-head’ or a ‘bowl-lift' mixer, but you can easily download a PDF version of your Owners Manual from the KA website (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/p...). Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use KSM90P)and select the last file listed that appear under Owners Manuals: KSM90PSWW0.pdf (2930.74 KB)and save that file to your PC. You’ll need to have Adobe Reader to be able to open it. Turn to Page 11 and you will find the instructions for adjusting the mixer head height. I have extracted the instructions below:
    Beater to Bowl Clearance
Your mixer is adjusted at the factory so that the flat beater just clears the bottom of the bowl. If for any reason, the flat beater hits the bottom of the bowl or is too far away from the bowl, clearance

    Tilt-Head models
    • Unplug mixer.
    • Lift motor head.
    • Turn screw (A) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater or clockwise (right) to lower flat beater.
    • Make adjustment with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl.
If you over adjust the screw, the bowl lock lever may not lock into place.

    Bowl-Lift models
    • Unplug mixer.
    • Place bowl lift handle in down position.

    • Turn screw (B) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater and clockwise (right) to lower flat beater.
•Make adjustments with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl.

Sorry I didn't have this in my earlier reply. I hope this helps, too! –Howard, Burke, VA

My kitchen aid stand mixer startnig making noise and wobbling. I noticed that the pin attaching the top to the base has been pushed out halfway and I can't push it back. Any solutions?

Remove the bowl, turn it upside down on a towel, look up inside the pedestal. Right in the middle where the hinge pin goes through there is a screw, unscrew it a little, push the hinge pin back to where it belongs and then tighten the screw up tight. Turn mixer up the right way, raise head up, fit bowl & flat paddle. Lower head & turn machine on low, listen for paddle tinging on bowl, if it is touching turn off and raise the head. Look into hinge area from the front, that screw is the head height adjustment. Clockwise to lower paddle in bowl, anti clockwise to raise. You want to lower it until you hear the paddle tinging on the bowl & then raise it enough to clear without tinging. You don't wind the screw in & out huge amounts, 1/4 to 1/2 a turn at a time is plenty.

I cannot remove the paddle from my Hobart stand mixer. I was making a very large batch of cookies and when I finished the paddle would not come off. I put the paddle on just before starting the cooki

Get some CRC into the top between shaft and paddle socket and in and around that driving lug on the side. Then grasp the paddle with a hand on either side and rock (turn) it back and forth as forcefully as you can until it starts to come free. Eventually it will start to move and you will be able to remove it. Polish the shaft and scrape out the hole, it is flour that has wafted in there that has tightened it up, it packs & embeds itself into the aluminium paddle.

I need to get the old oil out of my Hobart D300 and put new grease back into the head. How do I get the old oil out without turning the mixer upside down and put new grease in. How much grease does the...

Hello Chardanio,

I understand you are wanting to give you Hobart D300 an Oil change.
Here are the steps you need to follow:

1. Locate the oil plug on the buttom of the head next to the plantary and the bowl slides. It will be a bolt just like on you car.
2. Run you machine for a short time in order to get the oil warm so that it will flow out of the gear box.
3. Remove the bolt so that the oil will come out into a container.
4. Once drained you reinstall the bolt
5. Remove the top of the Head (2 screws)
6. You will locate a plate that has a few bolts holding it on. On that plate there is a little tin cap you can remove it with a little flat screwdriver. Becarfule not to damage it you will have to put it back in the hole after you fill the unit.
7. Install 70oz of 140 weight gear oil. It is also thick you may have to push it in to the unit then run the unit and check the oil sight. Add slowly as you do not want to over fill the unit.
8. Replace the cap. (if damaged you will need to order a 00-064871 from the Hobart Corp. at 1-800-446-2278 or another part company)
9. Replace the top of the Head and you are done.

Turn on the unit and us it as you have before.

If you have any other questions please post to this thread.

Thank you for using FixYa hope this helps.

My hobart n50 runs on the same speed in 1 and 2 and will not engage in 3 .. also sounds louder than normal..how do you lube?

Hello Ldl,

I understand that you are having a problem with you 5 quart commercial mixer by hobart. The 1 and 2 are the same speed and you are not getting 3. You also would like to know what oil to use in your machine and how to fill the unit.

To answer you speed question first. The speed is adjusted by the bolt located in the middle of the planetary (the part that turns underneath of the head the attachments hook to). If this bolt is tightened all the way up or to lose it will not allow you to achieve all of the speeds. You will have to adjust this screw many times and turn the machine on to check you speeds. Eventually you will achieve all three speeds.

Before I answer how you lube the machine you need to know what kind of lube to use. The gear box uses a 90 weight gear oil and the planetary uses 140 weight gear oil (grease).

Lubing the gear box with top cover:
1. Remove the top of the gear box (the cover)
2. There is a Round plate with three bolts (do not remove) in this plate there is a disc (looks like a cap seal) use a small screw driver to pry this disc out carefully you will have to put it back once you are done lubing the unit.
Lubing with out a top cover:
1. Remove the switch and gear selector (remember position of gear selector)
2. Fill thru whole in side behind plate removed

Lubing planitary:
1. Remove drip ring
2. Remove the planetary (unscrew bolt in middle)
3. Remove key located in the side of shaft
4. Lube and put back together

Mixer Head Wobbles

Fixed it!!! My mixer had the same problem.  It was a hand-me-down...
Okay, so I lifted the head and looked down into the pivot where there is a screw (looking from the front of the mixer).  I took a flat-heat screwdriver and turned it counter-clockwise.  (It took quite a few turns, the screw came out a few millimeters.)
BUT when I lowered the head, hurray!  No more paddle rubbing against the bowl!  No more head jumping up and down!  No more wobbling in the "locked" position!
Try it!

Re kitchen aid mixer . I was making bread dough with the lock on. Just when i was going to shut it off I hurt a click and then the paddles stopped turning. The motor runs but with a funny nose but it will...

Hi. Don't try to use the mixer anymore, and don't take the planetary off as the problem isn't there. If your mixer is still under warranty, call Kitchenaid, they are good at responding to mixer failure if it's under warranty.

If you're out of warranty remove the single screw to take off the silver band near the top of the mixer. The screw is at the back of the mixer. Next, remove the 4 screws that hold on the top cover. Remove the top cover and locate the transmission housing (it will be a black/gray plastic humpy looking thing) near the front of the machine. Look for cracks in this housing. you can do this without taking it off. If It's cracked, you have found the first problem, and it's a problem that many Kitchenaid owners, including me have had. This plastic transmission housing has no business being in a machine that you paid top dollar for. Their replacement housing is now made out of metal.

A word of warning, and customer service won't tell you this. As managment at Whirlpool Corp. told me. Even if my mixer was out of warranty. they may have repaired it for free, if only I had not taken it apart. So if you've found a cracked Trans. housing, put the cover back on, put the silver band back on and call Kitchenaid customer service. Tell them about your problem. Don't tell them that you took the cover off. They will tell you that because you are out of warranty, all they can do is refer you to one of their authorized repair centers.

If you take it to the repair center, ask for a quote, they will look at it and see the cracked trans. housing, then they will take the housing off and find that the worm gear has been destroyed and possibly the shaft bearings too, they may also find that the bearing seats have been damaged (as in my case). They will tell you about the damage and give you a quote about how much it will take to fix it. Then is the time to contact Customer Service again and demand to speak with a supervisor and tell him/her about the cheap plastic housing and the damage IT caused. Tell them that you want to be reimbursed for the damage caused by this flimsy part. They will argue with you. Ask to speak with management.
If they refuse, contact me at [email protected] and I may be of further help to you.

If you have found this solution helpfull, please rate it. Good luck!...You're going to need it ricardok45

Flat blade stuck on KA stand mixer

Using one of the bowls, filled it with hot water up to the shaft and where the paddle is hooked up. Using a cotton cloth, wrap it around the paddle and shaft, let it soak for 30 to 40 min. After 30 min, twist the paddle back and forth to loosen up whatever got stuck inside the shaft and paddle. Put a little of mineral oil so that the paddle will be easily remove and it will just slide out from the shaft.

Recalibrating of brushes

You don't need to guess- get a flashlight and look in the hole.  You'll see a small piece of metal in each- on one side it's upper left, the other lower right.  Put in the brush so that the notch is on the same side at the piece.  If this does not work, swap sides.  This worked first time for me.
