3 weeks after warranty expired, my LCD stops working...It displays fine and I am able to select certain things with remote but touch functionality is completely gone. Stuck here as I am not even able to upload anything to PC for backup (you have to confirm USB connection via touch screen...something that cannot be done with remote) What can it be? Read some posts from other camcorders where flex cable could be an issue, but it that's the case, why is it that LCD displays things? Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated...Flat repair fee from Sony is $311...outrageous !!!
My camera's touch screen on my SR12E also stopped working early this month (July 2010). Just before I had had it for two years.
I tried to backup, and was really struggling since most functions are done via "the touch of the screen".
But after much frustration trying, I found out that the camera also connects to the laptop the same way by pushing the "burn to disk" button. Try also the blue "EASY" button if the other do not work.
When this is done you can start the "SONY program" to choose import media or what it is called inside the program...
Now you will get the normal menu "popping up" so you can choose to backup the content to your computer.
Beware:
What I did further after backing up was to push the "reset" button to try to maybe get the "touch screen function" back in order.
But this only resets all preferences for the camera.
It did not delete what was stored on it.
The result is now that I will have to film in "default mode" (low quality) for the rest of my holidays, and get an irritating "set-up" screen menu prompting me to input the date etc each time I start the camera and at other intervals...
So the rest of my holiday will be in SD and not HD...
It should have been possible to choose the selections (navigate the camera) via your laptop when you end up in a situation like this...and need to change my settings.
Hope my solution were helpful for being able to backup.
I think you still should check with "consumer help" in your country if you can still get a free repair when the screen stops working, since you normally will be more extensively protected by law then what the warranty tell you.

My Sony HDR-SR12 screen quit working and the repair cost made the camera not worth fixing. I ended up ordering a replacement circuit board on Ebay from a seller named Pashatp. He sent two circuit boards and repair instructions for $33.98.
The repair requires some skill, but is not difficult. There are a lot of small screws involved and you will need to remember the order of disassembly so you can get the camera back together. Be careful unplugging the ribbon cables as some of them have locking levers which must be moved.
The most difficult part of the repair for me was getting the new circuit board coiled properly around the hinge, but the instructions were good and after a few tries it went back together easily and the camera is working well.

The above is very useful, i have been scowering the net for just such a solution but have only just found this after i kind of fumbled through the above on my own - It's a good point on the reset button though - thanks - i have toyed with that, but will stay well away now - Cheers :)
I have had the same issue and will be seeking to resolve with Sony in Basingstoke on the basis that the screen is not up to the task!
I have also tried to remove the files from the device which has been a major issue with the broken LCD as you cannot set the device to USB connection. Sony have been unable to assist on this issue advising that a Data Specialist in the yellow pages is the best way forward prior to sending the device in !!
However i managed to connect the device to the Sony Import Tool Software on my PC by connecting to the lead, powering on the HDR-SR12 and pressing the "Burn CD" button. This then enabled the device to be seen, i launched the Sony software and downloaded the files - ALL GOOD and very happy !!!
