This problem is outdoor unit issue. Blinking 4 times in carrier highwall unit means Compressor drive malfunction. Possible cause are the following:- Stuck up or grounded compressor.- Magnetic contractor in outdoor unit is defective or indoor unit relay supplying outdoor unit is defective.- No power supply going to outdoor unit

My tcl split ac works for 5 min, then gives e5 code.

E5 s a communication error between the indoor and outdoor units. It is stated in the service manual that the wiring between the indoor and outdoor has probably separated at one end of the terminal block. Most of the time however, it is usually a failure of either the indoor or outdoor electronic boards. A multimeter and knowledge of how to read "communications voltages is required. The machine will continually assess itself electronically to make sure all components are working properly. If after a given amount of attempts to communicate with the outdoor unit the machine still cant "talk" to the other 1/2 , it will show an E5 error and shut itself down. You could try switching off the power at the isolator or meter box for at LEAST 15 minutes and then turn back on to see if it resets. This sometimes works. Do not, just switch off and switch straight back on again.

Make sure all of the pressure switches are closed on the low voltage control circuit on the outdoor unit. If any are stuck open, the compressor will not kick on. Or just push the compressor contactor in with an insulated screwdriver to ensure the compressor does actually work.

I live in Phoenix, AZ. I have a 2 story 2300 sq ft home built in 2001. I have two Carrier AC units outside on the side of the house. They are the originals. The Large unit (upstairs) model 38CKC042340 and...

T the upstairs is a 3 1/2 ton 10.0 SEER condenser, and the downstairs is a 2 1/2 ton 10.0 SEER condenser. You can use any 10 SEER Unit on replacement, but if you go any higher in SEER (efficiency), there is a possibility the unit will freeze up. The reason is because the indoor coil also has an efficiency rating (10.0 SEER). It is not a good idea to mismatch units when it comes to SEER. Otherwise, you can use any brand of unit, if you want to go higher in efficiency, you need to change the indoor coil as well. Hope this helps. Mark

This is a 3 and 1/2 ton unit.
The 042 in the model number is the tonnage of your carrier unit.
AC tonnage is based on 12,000 btu per ton.
12,000.....1 ton
18,000.....1 and 1/2 ton
24,000.....2 ton
30,000.....2 and 1/2 ton
36,000.....3 ton
42,000.....3 and 1/2 ton
48,000.....4 ton
60,000.....5 ton.
There is no 4 and 1/2 ton unit.
