Yes the machine should not be left on for that long, it only takes a few minutes to heat up. It does not have an auto refill if the boiler is low on water. If it heats up the water in the boiler for over an hour, it is safe to assume, that the water might at some point turn to steam, when you use it for the first time, it flushes out all the steam, and fills the boiler with water.
Replace the steam boiler, and or check the thermostats and the element on the steam boiler. If those are working fine then the CPU board has failed especially where the power leads to the steam, look for sign of damage on the board.
Try this press the button for ground coffee then when it lights up press the coffee brew button, if water flows normally then the grind on the grinder needs to be adjusted coarser, if no water then the screen on the brew unit is blocked.
Re the Gaggia no power problem, the machine does have a re set button, 2 in fact the boiler unit must be removed and the two reset switches are between the sender units (brown in colour).
After disconecting the power source open the machine (top off)The three alan head screws that retain the boiler (front of the machine) unit must be removed it can be lifted clear to gain access to the bottom of the unit where the reset buttons are.
This will save hundreds of dollars in shipping and service fees.
