Question about LaCie Design by F. A. Porsche 160 GB Hard Drive

My LaCie is not recognized by my computer, makes a clicking noise when it tries to start up. I've used this external hard drive for several years with no problems.

It has most probably just reached its "end of life". Several years for a hard drive reading and writing is a good track record.
You can probably take the casing apart and replace the hard drive. Just make sure that this is an USB 2.0 interface before spending the money.

Not sure if this will work but try creating a UBCD (ultimate boot cd) for windows and with your usb hdd attached boot off the disk and see if it will see the hdd.
Sometimes you can use this to retrieve data. I have had some success.

Is Acronis software compatible with the LaCie external hard drive? I not have a partitioned LaCie hard drive (empty) with no space at all. Can I reformat to eliminate the Acronis software?

It sounds like your Lacie has died as the clicking noise it the drive attempting to find the tracks on the disk itself and not suceeding . Most Lacie products have a 12 month warrantee on them and so would suggest taking it back to the supplier and getting it replaced

Computer won't recognize (Vista)

Hello,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are

using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and

not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to

the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is

lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not

be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system,

and plug the harddrive, then Right-Click on my

computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk

Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should

see ALL the drives installed on your system,

including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is,

try and locate the one representing your harddrive,

and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter

and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter

(i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your

system, and click on OK.

This should make your harddrive to be detected

automatically.

Try this out and let me know how it goes.

Making Clicking noises and not being recognized by computer. This was all of the sudden and was not result of any trauma

I've had this exact same problem with a couple of LaCie drives.

The drive has failed. I would call LaCie Tech support (503) 844-4503 between the hours of 6am and 6pm (Pacific Time) to speak with one of their Technical Support representatives.

If it is still within warranty, they'll send you a new one.

This model comes with a 2-Year Limited Warranty - 1 year factory warranty for products bought before October 1st, 2007

Lacie extern. hard drive is recognized, but I can't access files

Try connecting the Lacie to another computer, if it doesn't work then the hard disk may need to be formatted using Disk Manager. I suggest you format as a primary partition in FAT32.
If it doesn't work then it is possible that the hard drive in the Lacie has failed.
To test the hard drive, remove it and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If it deosn't detect it as an external drive and you connot open folders and files then it is faulty.
You can install a new hard drive in the Lacie and then format in FAT32
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

LaCie 1TB extreme do not start and make strange noise

This is an issue I have seen on more than one occasion. I have two of the BD extreme's and I have found that replacing the power supply seems to have been the issue. I have spoken to Lacie about this but they have not admitted having any issue with the external power supply.

FW Lacie Porsche FW ext. HD 250GB light on case blinks and

conect your harddisk to computer whch has windows xp.
Then go to start emnu then type in run 'cmd"

then you can see command propmt.
Then go to your external drive letter like f:
then type 'chkdsk /r"
then pres "y'
then it fix error on hardisk.
Aslo you can format it .
Just take backup of data which you need then right clik on drive licon and format it.then it works fine.

Having Problem with both LaCie hard drives being recognized on both macs

Try to connect to another computer, and see if it recognizes the drive. If Not, you can dismantle LaCie and take the disk out.

Connecto your disk to another external box (USB or Firewire) so you can have access to you data.

Lacie lost evrything and is now clicking

Not without a clean sterile environment. Exposing the drive to room temperture and environment can damage the internal platters. i am willing to bet it the drive as well, but the clicking sounds like a bad drive arm, and continual attempts to use it may make the drive arm tear into the platters.
