You just purchased a Midland WR-100B All-Hazards Weather Radio. You have all the information programmed correctly in it and you are still not receiving any alerts. First of all, log on to this website and check to make sure that the transmitter tower in your area is still working (this means your county does not have a DEGRADED remark in its row).

When you get to the website, select your state and you will see a list of all the counties in your state. Find your county and locate the REMARKS column. If your county has a remark stating "OUT OF SERVICE" or "DEGRADED", it means the tower transmitting broadcasts for your state is not working due to technical problems or recent severe weather conditions. If your county doesn't have one of these remarks beside it, then the reason why you are not receiving any alerts on your radio is because the National Weather Service has special criteria that a storm has to meet in order for them to alert NOAA Weather Radio owners "In the middle of the night or while doing daily activities". To translate that for you, they don't want to disturb anyone by sending alerts for storms that are not "life threatening" or going to cause severe damage. NWR always runs Required Weekly Testing every Wednesday starting from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. If you are able to, check the radio then. Good morning, afternoon, evening or night; whatever time of day you are viewing this. You want to know why your weather radio just beeps and no voice or lights function properly. This has nothing to do with the codes you put in for your county. This has to do was the type of alert setting that is programmed into the radio. The alert setting that you have programmed into the radio is probably that TONE alert type. When this is selected, the alert will sound for 5 minutes or until any button is pressed except for the Weather/Snooze button. If you want your alert type settings changed, press MENU and use the up and down directional buttons until "ALT TYPE" is displayed on the screen. Use those same directional buttons to choose the alert type of your choice. If you choose DISPLAY, a text alert will scroll on your screen and no audio alert type will be sounded. If VOICE is selected, an alert will be sounded 8 seconds and you will hear the voice of the weather broadcaster for 5 minutes. These are the only other alert types you can choose other than TONE. Once you have chosen your alert type, press SELECT and and press MENU to exit. Remember that the NWS will only alert you if the storm meets their serve weather criteria (meaning the storm has to be able to cause a certain amount of damage or life threatening to "Wake someone up in the middle of the night"). With this radio functioning properly, it can really help you out in the long run by alerting you with the lastest information of what's going on in your area. The answer to your first question is no, but the company that made this product and even I suggest that you put 3 AA batteries in the radio for back-up just in case you have a power outage. Maybe you had a power outage and that's why it didn't sound an alert. The possible answer to your second question is that it the storm itself may have not been severe enough for the NWS to issue a severe storm. You should check these websites for more information- http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/?n=nwrfaq & http://www.weather.gov/nwr/nwrwarn.htm. FAQ #10 on the first website listed should give a clarification to you problem. They have certain criterias for issuing a warning and sounding an alert. The second website should give you a clarification on when the NWS sounds an alarm.

Sorry, but your radio does not have that feature, which is known as S.A.M.E. When set on ALERT your radio will receive all alert messages broadcast by the NOAA station that you are tuned to. The only fix, unfortunately, is to purchase a set that has the S.A.M.E. feature.

Click on the mute button while WEATHER is selected on the dial. This should MUTE audio and ALERT will appear on LED. Then you will only hear ALERTS.
