I have never seen the 948 have parental control lock---it's too old for support from Thompson (GE/RCA) so I will ask a question: what precisely is the set doing or not doing? Does it have the "Guide Plus" logo on the front of the cabinet?
What happened on a lot of these is the micro switches on the front go bad.
With back off (set unplugged) located the bundle of wires coming from front keyboard to top of set(a small pc board near the top of the middle of the three tubes).
Unplug the plug going to the keyboard----set will still work as remote receiver is also on that board.
can you hear the starting or a noise from the back?try unplugging then put back.sound to me that you will need a tech
most probably the trippler going bad.

I would check the low votage regulators, horizontal output and the flyback. The relay is the first stage of the start up process so the standby voltages are suspect as are the oscilation / Hv circuits. how are your trouble shooting skills?
I think it is degaussing problem
if any thing is lying which has magnet
please remove it.
&then put off tv for 15 minutes & then put on again.
do not move when it is on.
please let me know if it gets ok
or call tech to degauss it .
it is hardly 5 minutes job.
good luck
you should just need to go from the audio o/p of the tv. to the amp. now the tv will have either fixed or variable audio out. if fixed ok, if variable, you just need to know that the volume out of the jacks in the back is directly related to the volume of the tv, so you will need to keep the tv volume up a ways. now on the amp hook up to an available input, make sure that the input you use is set to recieve an analog signal. this is very important. every amp is different you may need to read the manual on how to adjust the input from analog/digital/audo.
good luck.
I think that Thomson is the manufacturer or distributor for GE parts, and Global INC is one of their distributers. keep that it mind when looking for your screen.
and you might be able to get it at vancebaldwin.com
good luck
