2060p only pumps 3 to 4 lbs . will not come up to pressure. reed valve looks good. unit is approx. 2 yrs old its been used for pumping tires and small air nailer home use only. any suggestions as to what repairs may be needed? thanks!

You have either a broken reed valve on the valve plate or a broken piston ring and/or badly scored cylinder. To check: remove the head on the air pump, the valve plate is directly under the head. The reeds have to be in good condition, no breaks, cracks or bending, to work properly. If they are OK, check the cylinder, it should be very smooth. You will have to remove the piston to check the ring around it. They have a tendency to dry out and sometimes a small section will flip over backwards and will no longer seal the piston enough to compress the air. You'll have to contact Sears to see if parts are still available for this compressor.

Problem sounds like valve plate /reed valves or worn cylinder /vinyl ring. Easy to check, push piston to top position and examine cylinder neer top looking for scratches. If scratched, most likely vinyl piston ring/s are worn and allowing pressure to leak past. If cylinders look good /shiney all the way up to top, remove head/s and examine reed plate/s for missing/broken reeds and or torn gasket/s. If your reed plate is missing one reed and your are good at being creative, you can seal individual hole by threading and plugging with thin piece of bolt. Good luck and good holidays

Oil free pumps do tend to blow the piston ring (not too expensive) available at searsparts.com. Remove covers to pump and manually turn crank until piston is at top and look at the condition of the cylinder neer top, If it looks scratched, order cylinder kit with piston ring. If it looks good and shiney, could be the valve plate in the head. There are reed valves that tend to break. Run pump however with covers removed and check with soapy water for air leaks and repair as needed (air leaks under the cover will prevent unit from filling). Good luck

I am assuming that you mean the tank pressure drops and that the compressor does not keep up as good as it use to. Check the basics first, make sure the tank is not full of water from condensate, check your air filter, and the belt tension. If that is all good then the first place would check is the valves in the cylinder head of the pump, but since I do not know the make and model I can only guess that it may have a reed type valve used in it, these pumps quite often will need the valve plates replaced and will restore the pump capacity back to normal.

Installed new shallow well pump still only can get to 30 lbs pressure. when i turn pump off pressure drops to 20 lbs right away and stays there

When the pressure switch fails the comperssor will overpressure to the point of safety release at about 150 - 160 psi. It sounds as if your compressor is not producing enough pressure to cycle off at 120 and just keeps running. This happens when air is leaking from fittings or worn cylinder / reed valves. Don't worry, with some simple tests we will find the actual problem. I am assuming that your compressor is oilfree type. If there are leaks the compressor may not reach set pressure. I use soapy water on all connections and on the head/headvalve (remove plastic covers to get to all parts that may leak) while compressor is running. Make repairs as necessary. If still low pressure, while compressor is running and has reached max obtainable pressure (in your case 60 lbs), carefully place finger over intake port hole (remove filter). If the compressor is pumping normally but leaking there will be ample suction at intake and cause the compressor to speed-up when intake is obstructed with finger. If you feel plenty of suction and no visible (soapy water) leaks, then the problem is probably the cylinder /ring is not correctly seating /scratched and air is leaking past cylinder. Make sure that the cylinder /piston ring is properly aligned and that the lip on the vinyl ring is up toward the head. On oilfree compressors you can examine the cylinder by pushing the piston all the way up, then look for scratches neer top of cylinder. If scratched, pressure is leaking past cylinder, install cylinder kit. If you do not feel suction but rather air blowing out of the intake, (do this test when tank has reached 60 psi) then the problem is the headvalve plate/reed valves are leaking. The reeds must seal perfectly on their seats and not be bent or have obstruction. Replace as necessary. If reeds or headgasket is leaking the discharge air will be very hot. Only one other thing to check and that is the intank check valve. Easy to check. Run compressor till you have about 50+ lbs in the tank then unplug compressor. Carefully loosen the inlet hose at checkvalve and listen for air leaking out of tank. (check valve is the brass valve at tank) If leaking replace checkvalve. Use caution when removing head to try and save the gaskets. If you have oil type pump, and no air leaks (soapy water test) suspect reed valves/valve plate. It could very well be the valve plate however before you order parts take a look at the cylinders. Unplug the unit, remove the cover from crank side and turn the compressor by hand till the/a piston is at top of stroke. Examine upper cylinder for scratches /wear or failed vinyl piston ring. On oil-free compressors, dirt and grit is sucked-in from the bottom of the cylinder and causes leaks between cylinder wall and piston. If scratched, air pressure is leaking down thru cylinder wall. Failed reed valves cause a pulsation at the intake port (air seems to be pumped out the intake). If you see a model number anywhere on the pump that begins with " WL", your pump is made by Campbell Hausfeld. Parts can be ordered from www.chpower.com. other-wise order parts from sears parts. SOUNDS LIKE THE VALVES IN YOUR HEAD ARE NOT CLOSING ALL THE WAY. THEY ARE MOST LIKELY REED VALVES, THIN STRIPS OF METAL THAT OPEN AND CLOSE WHEN THE PISTON MOVES. MAKE SURE THEY ARE CLOSING ALL THE WAY (NOT CARBONED UP). DID YOU REMOVE THE HEAD AND DID YOU PUT BACK LIKE YOU FOUND IT. NOT TURNED OR FLIPPED OVER.
