Can I update?change the WEP encryption to WPA on my BenQ 5100U if so how do I do it

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, configure the router'swireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPAor WPA2 encryption key and then configure wireless cards in the laptops and orcomputers with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router.

WPA and WPA2 are not supported by the DS Lite, only WEP and unencrypted wifi connections are. There is no known way at the moment to make the DS Lite support WPA of any form so your only three options are to go to WEP encryption, use no encryption (not recommended), or set up an adhoc connection on a computer with that is connected to your router that has internet connection sharing enabled.

If your using WPA and your Nintendo DS only supports WEP Encryption theres no way you can connect it to the internet. WEP encryption is different from WPA.

WEP key uses hexadecimal - using characters 0-9, A-F or ASCII format. The ASCII format is easier to remember. The ASCII string is converted to HEX over the network.

Example of WEP key encryption are:

*64-bit hexadecimal keys are exactly 10 characters in length. (12345678FA is a valid string of 10 characters for 64-bit encryption.)
*128-bit hexadecimal keys are exactly 26 characters in length. (456FBCDF123400122225271730 is a valid string of 26 characters for 128-bit encryption.)
*64-bit ASCII keys are exactly 5 characters in length (DMODE is a valid string of 5 characters for 64-bit encryption.)
*128-bit ASCII keys are exactly 13 characters in length (2002HALOSWIN1 is a valid string of 13 characters for 128-bit encryption.)

WPA Key is entered as a pass phrase between 8 to 63 alphanumeric characters in the ASCII format at both ends of the wireless connection. Although PSK accepts a minimum of eight characters, for proper security, it is a good idea to use ample length and should not use a commonly known phrase. This phrase is used to generate session keys that are unique for each wireless client.

To resolved the issue you have an option to change the WirelessSettings on your router to WEP instead of WPA since WEP is also a secured netwrok. however you need to keep in mind that if you change the encryption you need to configure all othere device connected to the router via WPA and change the settings to WEP.

Nintendo? You have to have a WEP key...and if your wireless encryption is not set up with a WEP key, if it has a WPA or a WPA-2 key, it won't work. You have to change the encryption on your wireless (either router or modem, whichever you are using) ...open a browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, put in your password, and change the encryption type to WEP...then put the settings in the DS.

It was a WPA key, not a WEP key. As there were no choices for WPA encryption in the encryption part of the connection process, I think I need to update my PSP using a USB cable.

Make sure you have the correct SSID name and encryption password. Older DSi's had problems connecting to WPA networks. Your network needs to be WEP and cannot be set for a higher encryption. If you are on WPA Nintendo has released an update recently which allows access to WPA networks, the key though is you need to get online first to upgrade your DSi so go to WEP first then upgrade to WPA.

No, WPA is more secure than WEP. Whoever told you that is wrong, its the other way round.

WEP is an older technology of encryption. Some older wireless devices won't work with WPA, but will with WEP. If all you devices can use WPA - then stick with that.

WEP is like a clear connection with no encryption only to get this connection you need to enter key number and password.
WPA is more like encrypted connection and to that also you shall enter key number and password.

In today's wireliss connection speed there's no differences and you better use WEP since they got less connectivity problems

First you must choose a common encryption strategy for your home network. (Yes I am assuming Home Network)

In most consumer routers you activate encryption on the wireless services of the router. After doing so you must also actiate encryption services on the wireless adapters that communicate with the wireless router. The names of the encryption services in the wireless router and wireless adapter are WPA and WEP. It is important to assure all wireless adapters to connect to the wireless router can handle the encryption chosen because the router will only perform one. There are options within each technique such as the number of bits of the keys -- the longer the better but only as long as the shortest device can support. WPA is preferable to WEP because it was designed to correct weaknesses in the WEP standard and implementation. However if there is even a single device to be connected that cannot do WPA you must do WEP or replace the device WPA in home systems often have a couple of other attribute being WPA-PSK and algorithm of TKIP -- which again every wireless adapter and the wireless router/access point must support.

To procede further in a sane manner you need to identify all wireless devices that will participate in your wireless network and determine their capablities for encryption. This is generally done searching manufacturer websites under support looking for user guides and firmware updates. Sometimes a devices capabilities in the manual require firmware updates to be true for the device. Once that is figured out the standards for your network can be set and the actual implementation can proceed. You will probably want a working wired computer to maintain access to the outside world for assistance if anything goes wrong. You also want to track your changes and know how to back things out incase things become too difficult.
