Reformatting the Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504

What key sequence do I use to get this old computer to let me do a reformat and fresh install of the hard drive. I have checked the manual and the online sites and can not find the proper sequence. I did it about 5 years ago and figured it out by accident, but can't remember it now.

You did not specify what operating system you are currently using, anyhow, if you are using winxp, configure the bios setting set the cd rom as your 1st boot device and insert the winxp cd to the cd rom then save and exit the. computer will automatically reboot after exit. a message will appear "press any key to boot from cd" you may press a key. you follow correctly instructions or message from the screen then you will succeed. hoping that this will help you. if you have some queries you may send me thru my e-mail.

Hi, you will have to change the boot sequenc.when you turn on watch the screen and you will see very quickly to press F2 or a different key to go into the bios. I think it is on the first screen to change the sequence - Boot from cdrom then hard drive.
Then insert your dvd and install, if you need more help, please ask.

Toshiba satellite 5005-S504 boots over and over and over non stop

It sounds like the hard drive is dying. I had a computer do the same thing and it turned out to be the hard drive. You should still be able to access the bios though. Try hittind either delete or F1 as soon as your toshiba screen appears.

Toshiba satellite 5005-S504 Secure Digital Card Slot problem

Hi there
Take a close look inside the card slot (you may need a torch/flashlight) look to see if any of the brass pins are bent or out of position, if they are use a very small flat head screwdriver to gently push them back into place.
If all looks fine with the slot and there are no foreign objects inside your card maybe faulty.
Also i suggest the you check the drivers are installed, check this in device manager.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504; boot from USB? Reformat HD w/o CD-ROM?

First these laptops are what is called "Legacy Free", meaning there is no BIOS, at all, ever, for all time, not gonna be there.

Second, the Floppy option is referring to any supported USB Floppy drive. If you have one great, if not this will be more difficult.

NOTE**** - If at any point you do not know what I'm referring to, please do not attempt this, you will likely render your HDD useless.

If you have the Floppy on USB, then you will need the XP setup on Floppy Disk and there are alot of disks, and from my own experience so far, No, a USB flash drive will not work, I even tried an emulator which formatted it as a floppy disk.

If you do not have a floppy, then you will need to remove the harddrive and connect it via an external USB drive cage to another pc, create two partitions, one for your OEM OS disc, the other for the installation. Obviously your OEM OS Disc is not all that large, only partition what it needs, and make sure you make it a bootable partition. For XP you will also need the SATA drivers for the hard drive as XP does not have them included in the setup disc. If you do not have these, you will need to find them or just stop here, because you can go no further.

This is one of the biggest drawbacks of a "Legacy Free" system, you cannot change the SATA operation in BIOS like most other pc's. The system configuration is done through a windows utility from Toshiba.
