The flash tube or the circuit could be burned out as it is fairly high voltage.
if the tube is black then its blown

Have you tried to reset the camera to the factory default settings? There may be a setting that has the flash disabled. To reset the camera: have the camera in shooting mode - press Menu - left arrow to reset and press Ok. You will see Reset Yes or No. Highlight Yes and press Ok. This will reset the camera to factory settings. It will not affect any images that have already been taken. See if the flash is able to fire now.
