Check that the springs on each end of the batteries are keeping them together tightly (connected) if thats not it the only other option is to replace the stat

Pull the face plate evenly all the way around, it just snaps off the back plate screwed to the wall batteries are visible .

If it has backup batteries try replacing them.

My furnace has stopped working. the thermostat (Honeywell Chromotherm III) displays HOLD - AC. What does this mean? I replaced the batteries but nothing has changed.

Try to find a reset button or just change out the thermostat. I'm guessing you don't have the manual. Thats a pretty old model, I think you have to set the time and day before you can use the thermostat.

Chronotherm III...Replace Battery notification blinking...replaced twice with the appropriate batteries, turned the correct way. Cleaned off the battery terminals and still have replace battery...

Thermostat problem; Honeywell chronotherm lll ' Low Batt. indicator Keeps blinking after Batteries replace. I chk'd batt. with elect. volt ntr. Was told to pull batt. and change ends with them , letthem stay reversed for 5-10 sec. then put them back in right order,and replace thermostat. No success!

I have a honeywell chromotherm iii unit. Right now it is flashing the time with the notation "AC". What does this mean? The air hasn't worked for a day or so.

"AC" means no AC power to thermostat

Flashing battery symbol

I had this same problem today. I called Honeywell and they said the flashing broken battery symbol may mean low batteries, or it may mean the battery type is incorrect. They recommend only non-rechargeable alkaline batteries. I was using rechargeable NiMH batteries. Even though they were fully charged, I had the flashing battery symbol and the thermostat relay would not work. I replaced with alkaline, the flashing battery indicator went out, the thermostat works again.
Odd that it worked for 3 months on the rechargeables after first install. I did notice the broken battery symbol came on after the first few days, but I checked the battery charges and they were good, so I disregarded the symbol until the thermostat stopped working today. Apparently there is something about the NiMH performance characteristic that the thermostat doesn't like.

It is not adjustable, sounds like the LED is going bad. Tstat has battery back up for power outages. If you slide the fan switch from auto to on does the blower motor start? If not control problem with unit.

Honeywell Chronotherm III is stuck on Repl Batt

when i have seen this in the past, i have been able to clean the contacts that the batteries touch.they may not look dirty, but if they get a little corrosion or get tarnished, they will not let the full battery power get to the stat and it will think the battery is low. try cleaning it with some emery cloth and see if that helps.

We have a Honeywell Chromotherm III thermostat and it has an error message "-AC". No fan, AC, heat, etc. Any ideas?

I almost think you have no power source to the thermostat as if the power is off to the air handler unit (furnace), or the 24 volt transformer is bad. Could well be that the error codes are being powered by the battery.
