No solution, but I have the same problem. I think my only option is to buy a new one and return the old...too bad WALMART doesn't carry the camera anymore! I've had it for only 6 months!!!

DSC-HX5, Lens is Stuck in Zoom out mode. Turn On works but screen stays black. Automatically turns off after 10-20 seconds.

Since there is nothing you can do to fix this at home you have 2 choices, replace the camera or send it back to the manufacturer for exchange (very expensive)

Why won't my camera turn on

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them.
And here's a 16 minute video summary of the info shown in the link. But note that the article link above goes into more detail than this video:

Lens stuck out

The lens has probably got something in the retraction mechanism that is stopping it retracting. This can be something as simple as sand or grit or as a result of a drop or knock. In most cases the camera will need to be stripped apart to remove the lens assy before it can be repaired. This is best left to a professional camera repair shop.

Samsung L730 wont extend lens and dosent turn on right

Met the same problem. I disassembled camera and found a lot of sand in lens transmission. I couldn't move lens even by hand. It was strongly jammed. I had to disassemble lens block completely to remove all sand. Now camera fully functional.

Ihave the same problem. Its annoying. When you turn it on does it make a buzzing noise? Cause that's what mine does. Except I never dropped my camera. It just goes to the Polaroid screen and then turns off. I'm wishing I wouldve bought a different camera :( Sorry I can't help..
