My compaq nx6110 xp professional sp3(old laptop) will not read/write micro sd card 2gb in a usb micro sd reader. It is recognised by windows but thats all.
Sometimes when a flash memory stick fails because it was not removed from the USB port properly. If the device is removed by just pulling it out of the USB port, it can cause the flash device to fail, you must click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Task Bar and select the device you wish to remove and only do so when instructed to do so.
When the flash memory device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy.
You need to format the external drive. Format the drive as primary drive and in FAT32. (FAT32 will allow data to be exchanged between MACs and PCs).
Insert the external hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Health.

No sorry, I didn't explain enough about the situation.
The card does not show up in My Computer but it is recognized by windows as proven by the "safely remove hardware" pop-up.
My problem is that I cannot format the card because windows keeps saying that the card is write protected.
This does not happen on other computers so it is not the card reader or the card.
The card will show up in HP USB Disk Storage Format tool and even the capacity of it but when I try to Fat32 it. I get the error message.
I've tried the auto fit-it on windows support for usb disc drives and the i-pod problem but this just crashes my computer and won't restart unless I choose LAST Known Good Configuration.
Thanks a million for your last comment, any further help is much appreciated!!!
