Sorry, I have no virtual Phillips screwdriver to lend you. You can find them at any hardware store.

After removing the screws with a phillips screwdriver, pry open the back with a regular screwdriver. There are two notches on the top edge of the calculator to pry. It takes a lot of force.

OK, I pried on it but it doesn't open up. ARRGGH! TI doesn't even say how to do this on their official site. OK, here goes...success, whew!!

Here's the answer people are really looking for. The little tabs they use to hold the case together are 1.5 inches down from the top of the calculator on both sides. Pry the back out away from the front at these points and they will pop off and the whole back will come off so you can replace the batteries.

Now why was that so hard to explain for someone who has already done it and is taking the time to write something about it? There must be 15 answers on the web saying to take the screws out (DUH) and take the back off (Double DUH), but nowhere could I find the real answer. I had to take a chance of breaking the thing to find out where the tabs are.

The most recent TI-30X\'s coming out of China have cases which are EXTREMELY hard to pry open after the screws have been removed. The retaining tabs are exactly 1.5 inches down from the top, just below the center of the wide slot on the side. Use your largest, widest screwdriver blade to twist and pry and expect some cosmetic damage of the case before it pops open. The older TI-30\'s had decent batteries and ran for me for over 5 years before I had needed to do any battery replacements. The new Chinese TI-30\'s and their Chinese alkaline batteries fail very quickly (use good quality US-manufactured non-alkalines for replacement). Not only that but when I removed the original batteries from my new, nonabused Chinese TI-30 it had green, corroded battery contacts touching the negative (small) side of the batteries. Clean these contacts up with a light scraping and twirl a pencil eraser on them to repair them up before installing new, good batteries.

What kind of batteries and where can I find batteries for my TI-30A?

I hope you mean the TI-30XA, since TI never released a TI-30A.

The TI-30XA uses two A76 batteries, also known as 357. You should be able to find them at just about any department, electronics, or office-supply store.
