A power surge zapped my TV, I turned it back on, it tried to bring up the picture but shut off again. A green light keeps blinking.

if a power surge shut down the unit than a circuit, capacitor or fuse is blown and or burnt and you wont smell that most of the time and since it does have power fuse wasnt blown so a circuit -diode-capacitor is fried somewhere problem is common for an electricial damaged tv but to diagnose an electronic tech would need to tear it apart

What is the first thing to check after a power surge caused by a close by lightning strike?

See if everything works. Stereos & TV's are usually the first to go. Items with digital devices go next analogs after that & grounded devices last. A whole house surge suppressor costs about 50 bucks and is just a few wires to connect & at the very least wall adapter surge suppressors should be connected to everything.

Viewsonic TV model N4285P-4M wont turn on, beeps and smells like burning ozone

Look for bulging tops on the capacitors similar to the photo.

Plasma made a loud pop then shut off and will not turn back on. There was also a burning smell. Any suggestions on a fix and price is appreciated.

Having similar problem and it sounds like an obvious short circuit if you heard it and can smell it, and it probably took out power supply fuse, so the first thing to do is pull off back of TV and look for obvious toasted components by eye or smell. Capacitors sometimes will pop when they go, and you can see the tops will be bulging out, or black marks, so look and smell all large capacitors first on power supply main board, then check to see if fuse blew. Sometimes the obvious is easy to fix.

Good luck,

The tv smells like a burning wire

Can you describe where the odor is coming from. Is it coming out from the side panels on the tv set itself, or perhaps the plug, on end of the main power wire. Check around the electrical outlet. Make sure nothing else is plugged into the same outlet. It sounds as if some of the electrical components on the circuit board are burnt or burning out. Tv may have experienced a power surge, etc. Check also if the power plug is heating up. Be careful and smell around top side vents on tv. Be sure and unplug the set before leaving it unattended if you cannot locate the source of the "burning wire smell."

The tv will not turn on and smells like something burned up ..may have had a power surge

The power unit needs to be checked and/or changed. Please refer to a professional service center because you could die trying this yourself (the risk of electrical shock is very big).

I turned on my tv this morning and it started smoking and of course smelling like something inside was burning. We took off the back and can see nothing that looks burnt or melted but the tv still wont...

hi,
may be ur tvs lamp side have some problem. may be the lamp over heated and burned. just open its lamp cover ann check it.
also check its power supply input point(near fuse) there is an MOV (used for voltage surge protection) is burned or not. if there is any voltage surge it will get shorted and the fuse will blow off, protect the power supply for any further damage. check the fuse also. if found open then check the MOV. insert fuse only after replacing the MOV.

Burning and fan type sound

That is probably the power section about to fail. The burning smell is going to be from overheating components. You will have to take it into either an akai repair depot or a local tv repair and have it looked at. Get an estimate first. The repair cost on this could be cheap if itis obvious and the repair gys are on the ball or it can be pricey if they just replace major parts (typical). Also have a good idea of what replacement cost is so you know if it is worth fixing.

No picture or sound

If you had a burning smell, well the board is toast. These sets are made to replace the entire board at one time. Before installing the replacement module, the picture tube should be checked. A defective picture tube ( such as a G1 short) may cause a failure in the power supply section.
