My name is Peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician.
This is a difficult question to answer because you did not provide a model number. When you open the dish washer door you will see a metal label. Your model number is on this label.
Generally, manufactures use a special screw called a torque screw. The head of the screw looks like a star. It may be a different head screw.
Dish washer door handles are made of plastic. It is not uncommon for the handle housing, the handle or the retention spring to break.
On some dish washers you have to remove the inside door panel to access the handle assembly and on others there is a cover plate for the dishwasher control panel at the top of the inside of the door.
Before you attempt this task - do not go blind. Give me your model number.
The door latch in Kenmore and Kitchenaid isn't of the best design. The spring steel latching tab is needs to push down the black plastic slide mechanism when the door in closed. That slide pushes down on a micro switch which interrupts the cycle when you open the door when the dish washer is running. Take the latch assembly back out. You can insert two compression springs inside the slide on each side of the latch. They are approx 3/16 Dia x 3/4 to 1 inch long. In the hardware dept at Home Depot or Lowe's..The springs will push the slide down hard enough to activate the switch. Right now your dish washer thinks the door is open.
The spring should take the weight of the door to prevent it from dropping hard when opened. There are two springs so one of them might have broken. One on each side.
just need to on do the unit from the two screws that hold the top of the dish washer in,,,make sure you have enough hose and power cord to pull the unit out just a little ways,,,but it is always best to unplug the dish washer,,,but the unit needs to be pulled out and the springs just need to be hook back on towards the bottom of the dish washer,,,always work safe,,unplug the dish washer. water and electrical never works together
My dishwasher has a timber door fixed to the dishwasher door
