I have a Whirlpool Microwave that runs when I open the door Model# GT4175SP. Any ideas?

Check fuse - magnetron tube may be fubar.

How old is your microwave oven?

It may be a broken door open lever or a worn or broken door open button, or possibly the spring mount for the door latch heads (hook-like projections) may be off inside the door.

If it's an owner the range type, you can likely get to and replace the door latch parts by just removing the control panel assembly.

If you have to remove it from the wall to remove the cover, you can download Whirlpool owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If it's a counter top unit, you will need to remove the outer cover to get to the door latching parts, in which case you can see these files: safety disassembly.

Once it is apart, you'll be able to see how the door open button would press against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should open.

I'm assuming you mis-typed and meant the oven begins running when you SHUT the door and stops when you OPEN the door. Please tell me this is what you meant! If the microwave oven runs with the door open, UPLUG IT IMMEDIATELY AND DO NOT USE IT!!!

If the oven begins running without pushing the start button then the controller is bad or the Start button is worn out and making contact without pushing it. (Most likely it is your controller.) Generally, it is not worth the cost to replace the controller on a 10 year old microwave. Probably time for a new one.

But if you want, you can call Whirlpool and see what they suggest at 800-253-1301.

open the cover of the oven you can see see the lock near the key pad. Press the lock the door will open. You can adjust the alignment by refixinfg the screws.

This model appears to be a counter top model (if not, please reply back, since procedure differs).

You will first need to unplug the unit and remove the outer cover.

Then you'll be able to see inside where the door open button presses on the release lever, which lifts up the hook-like projections (latches) on the door so that the door will open.

Usually the part that breaks is the release lever.

You can find helpful exploded views for similar models (such as the GT4185) here, but your best bet is to call the number at that site.
