However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

You do not need any driver. This device is plug and play in Windows XP. If it doesn't work then you probably have a USB problem. Have you checked in Device Manager to insure the usb port is working properly and is compatible with the drive, eg: usb 2.0 or usb 1.1?

Seagte purchased Maxtor in 2006. They kept the group that supported these products intact. Check Seagate's support site for specific information and/or contact Seagate's support group. They should be able to help you. The website is: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support...
As a last resort, you can get a free replacement from Seagate via their warranty repair group. They track via serial numbers, so no receipts should be needed.
