Hi Johnson, I think the best bet would be to reformat your disk and that you need a windows cd or download it from the internet. Are you using Windows XP? This normally happens when you remove a disk from one pc and put it into another pc, it tells you you have a disk error, only with windows XP! Best of luck , Sir John

Your dell seems to have a bad hard drive. The "DST" is a Drive Self Test. This test determines whether or not your drive can start up and read and write. When you have this failure you can sometimes recover some of the data but you probably will not be able to boot the computer if you have not been able to do so thus far. If your dell is still under warranty I would recommend that you call dell and see if you can get it replaced.

If you do not know if your dell is under warranty you can get on another computer and open your internet browser and navigate to http://support.dell.com.

Click on (Start Here) under "Support for Home Users"
On the top right hand side of the of the page hover over "Warranty Information" and click on "Warranty Status"

On that page you want to enter in your Service Tag. That can be located on the bottom of your laptop usually on a white or black sticker.

Once you find out if your laptop is under warranty you can call dells support line to see if you can get it repaired. You may need to provide the error code to them in order to get a replacement.

D610 DST Short Status Test Fail

It appears your hard disk has died and it may not be possible for you to retrieve your data.
Remove your hard drive from the laptop and insert it into an USB harddrive adapter, (they are not expensive and you can use it later as a external hard drive). Then plug it into the USB port of a working computer. The computer should/may see it as an external drive, if you are lucky you will be able to copy your data, if not, you are out of luck.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.

Greetings AROD718,

This error message is telling you that your hard-drive is nearing OR has already failed.

I would contact a buddy or go somewhere local to get Data recovery ASAP or if that is not important to you start shopping for a new hard-drive.

Hard drives are not very expensive and are simple to install, if you need further assistance please reply back!

Good luck,

Toshiba Satellite laptop boots up but shuts down on its own very shortly

Hi JOJO0803,

Based from the error message you're getting it sounds to me that your problem there is not software related but is more hardware in nature.Since you're getting a message "disk read error occurred IDE#0" this pertains to a problem with the hard drive itself. It's possible that your hard drive developed bad sectors or errors on the disc itself.

So to be sure I would recommend that you run the hardware diagnostics for your laptop computer especially the one for the hard drive since you're getting this message. If the hard drive fails the test or any other part fails in the test, contact your techsupport and ask for replacement parts if your PC is still under warranty. Otherwise you may have to buy parts for your laptop.

If the hard drive tests passed and all the other hardware tests also passed then you may proceed to troubeshoot the software using the Windows XP Home CD. Boot from the WinXP Home CD, and you get to the setup screen, choose "R" for recovery console and then on the prompt type "CHKDSK /R" let it run, it may take a while. afterwards it will bring you back to the prompt then type EXIT and it will reboot the system, see if that fixes the problem. Worst case scenario you may have to format then reinstall Windows XP again to fix this problem.

Hope this helps!

Peace! :)
