Refrigerator buzzing I have a maytag refrigerator, about 4 years old. It started buzzing a good bit lately. It does it when it's trying to kick on. It doesn't do it every time, sometimes it starts just fine. But when it does do it, it may do it any where from 2 to 5 times before it will kick on. I was wondering if you could help me decide what the problem is, so that I can get the right part to fix it. Thanks.

Serial, it sounds like your compressor windings are failing. This has a 5 year warranty on it. I've seen this may times. Call for warranty service and have them replace the compressor, Catriver.

The freezer is defrosting and the refrigerator is warming. the compressor is kicking on approximately every three minutes and is making a loud buzzing sound when it kicks on. is my compressor shot?

Probably not. The compressors are very sturdy and long lasting. The compressor is controlled by a start relay, and is protected by a thermal overload. It sounds like your start relay is bad, which would explain the buzzing sound. It takes a certain amount of time to cool down, and then tries to start again. The start capacitor and start relay should be replaced.

It sounds like your evaporator fan motor, they last about 4-5 years. Try to see if the buzzing noise comes from the motor, usually in the freezer compartment behind a vented cover plate

The freezer is usually cooled by the compressor, the fridge is then cooled by an evaporator fan motor ($30). If this fan seizes or slows down then the fridge warms up (it sometimes starts squealing before this happens). It could be that your drain hose is clogged or frozen. Maybe the temperature adjuster go bumped.

If you think it is the evaporator fan motor:
Check to be sure you can get a replacement fan first, they last about 4 - 5 years. Can get from a parts supplier or electric motor company.
UNPLUG fridge. Located usually in top of freezer behind a vented cover plate. Remove cover, remove screws holding fan in, may have to cut wires. Replace with new motor, make sure the fan pushes air into the freezer area and doesn't spin backward drawing air from the freezer area.

Compressor problem. There are start components mounted on the side of the compressor, and should be removed and tested. The parts include the start relay, (start/run capacitor if it has one) and the overload switch.
To test these components you must have a working knowledge of electrical an use of a good VOM meter.
If not, remove the parts, and take them to an appliance parts house. They usually are happy to test them for you.
If they test O.K. you have a failed compressor.
P.S. If this machine is under 5 years old, the compressor is under warranty, (some have an extended 10 year warranty). if the warranty is in effect, do nothing. Call the dealer who would handle the warranty. You would have to pay for replacement of the start components, but having it serviced by an authorized warranty station will keep the balance of the compressor warranty in effect. Hope this helps... REF AND FREEZER STOP COOLING

We had a repairman come out, said it was the compressor, bad news...$650 if he repaired...good news...compressor under manufacturer's warranty for five years so you may want to call Maytag. It will be less expensive if the part is covered and you only have to pay for labor. Hope this helps. Bought our fridge 12/2004 so it was covered.
