SOURCE: External Hard power is on but does not show up on my pc and does not seem to be running

Does it happen to be a Maxtor II? I had a very similar issue with my external and it devastated my backup program.

If the power light is coming on but not being recognized by the OS, your first step is (as you said) trying a different USB/Firewire cable. If that does not work and you don't care about voiding an expired warranty, you can open the case and remove the HDD. It will have several screws in the back; just undo them and slide it out. Try hooking the HDD up through IDE (or SATA if equipped) and after powering up, go into BIOS and see if it shows up on the IDE(SATA) list. If it doesn't, then as far as I know, your only other option is to try a pricey data recovery service.

Good luck!

Dell Dimension 8400 running xp has died. Can I put the hard drive into a spare slot in a Windows 7 PC to get the data off the XP HD?

Two Options:1. Yes you can as long as your Windows 7 PC has the correct connection for your hard drive. Most likely you need an IDE connection. If you have an IDE hard drive and the Windows 7 PC has an IDE connection, then you will need to make sure to "slave" the hard drive by moving the jumper on the hard drive to slave mode.
2. If your Windows 7 pc doesn't have an IDE connection, the purchase a USB to IDE cable adapter:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2329300&CatId=3770

This way you can plug your hard drive into any computer through USB.

How do I add more memory to my dell dimension 3000 computer thatn has a 34 GB Harddrive?

Go buy an IDE hard drive of whichever size you want, and connect it to the IDE cable that your current drive is connected to inside the computer. If you don't want to reinstall windows, you'll have to either purchase a separate IDE cable and connect the new drive to another IDE port on your motherboard (IDE cables are the thin, flattned cables that are fairly wide) If your current IDE cable has a freed up connection, ensure that your drives are jumpered properly with the master/slave options that should be printed on the drive itself, with a diagram. Your main drive (34GB) should be the master, the new one set to slave - this will keep the computer booting off of your current hard drive. It may seem intimidating, but installing a new hard drive is easy once you open up the computer and start comparing parts, looking for your hard drive ports and power supply cables. Just make sure the IDE cable and the power supply cable are firmly attached to the new hard drive when you install it.(power supply cable usually has a white tip, with four loosely bound wires leading to it) I hope this helps!

I dropped my unit. It does not turn on. How can I

It depends on what got damaged when you dropped the unit. Open up the enclosure. Look for any wires that came loose. Reconnect any loose wires.

If the wires are broken, none are loose or reconnecting the wires doesn't help, you can get a new enclosure (3.5 ATA (IDE)) and put the drive in that. Alternatively, get a USB/IDE/SATA multiple drive connector (where the drive stays out in the open). Connect the drive in question to the IDE side. Then connect the usb cable for either option to the computer and see if the drive is recognized. If it is recognized then you can transfer the data. If this doesn't work, the drive itself may have been damaged. The way to get the data would involve a data recovery company taking apart the drive and reading the information directly from the platters - slow and expensive.

I hope this helps.

(please note that the power for the USB/IDE/SATA dongle should be connected before attaching the drive to the computer. In some models, it should be powered up before connecting the drive to the device to avoid a power surge during power up.)

Run wd1600 via ide-usb problems

Just replace the case the drive is in. You can get them from stores that sell computer parts like Fry's Electronics. There are many online sources too.

I have 3in1 USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA Cable but nothing to show me how to use this kit

SATA 3.5" 2.5" IDE 3 IN 1 TO USB 2.0 CABLE ADAPTOR KIT

1 external connection kit
1 internal connection kit

The internal connect kit consists of 1 red USB connector cable
and 1 internal white male molex connector to SATA female power connector
( 1 yellow wire , 2 black wires , 1 red wire )

the external connect kit
consists of a 3 pin power adaptor (with a tiny plug to save space) feeding a power supply which powers either IDE thru a Molex connector or SATA through a supplied adaptor. Supplied also are data connectors to link the IDE or SATA hard drive with a USB port. Use this adaptor set to retrieve data from a hard drive when it is not mounted in a computer.
