I have a Thomson clock radio model RR65U which is battery/mains operated. I have always used it on mains supply, but I recently fitted a working 9v battery as required, but now find that the radio does not work on battery, What is wrong please? Thanks

SOURCE: How to work / setBuch radio alarmclock

I just found my manual for the Sharper Image SI785 CD/Radio Alarm Clock with Sound Soother. Had misplaced it for quite a while. Am not saavy enough to know how to post it online, but if anyone needs one, just email back your address and I'll be happy to send it. I remember how frustrating it has been trying to program/reprogram one without it. Looking forward now to knowing how to use this thing :)

They're just used to retain memory. That's all. Once power comes on, the time should be correct. Now if the power went out and there was no battery on the clock, when the power comes back on it goes straight to flashing 1200.

I cannot get get it to turn on....batteries changed, but nothing works but the clock

You didn't say whether it is a mains operated unit or solely battery operated?

Mains operated clocks often have a back-up battery to keep the clock accurate if there is a power cut.

Clock radios and radio alarm clocks of all but the worst quality tend to be fairly reliable and long-lasting but the switches tend to be unreliable and need periodic cleaning. I have known the loudspeaker unit fail but this is rare.

I suggest you ask your question again supplying more details.

Will not work.

Hope it's not an expensive radio. it looks to me defective. It's not easy to get radios repaired currently. Most tiemservice worth more then the radio

ASDA durabrand radio model no. LEDAB0701 information bar has stopped working

Hi - As per original question, NOT A TV, the LEDAB0701 is an ASDA Durabrand DAB Radio, so no remote! Just hit this problem - and found a work-around. Sound always worked - display and backlight failed. Could not spring radio apart - as well as the screw in the battery compartment - there seems an anchor the other end that defeated me. I run off the supplied Power supply and rechargeable batteries. The batteries ran down and I plugged the psu and display came back - for a few minutes! The sealed Power Supply unit (psu) is probably unregulated non-switched mode type. It gave 15.6v unloaded. Unregulated psu's normally run 1.4x nominal voltage with no load and are pulled down to the nominal voltage as the load current is taken (i.e. ASDA psu should have been 9v x1.4 =12.6v not 15.6v).

Seems the radio is sensitive to high psu voltage as when I ran off a regulated psu - problem partly went away. Regulated means you get whatever voltage you set whether no load, half load or full rated load.

Also once switched off fault appears the internal batteries were keeping the display off setting. I used a 12v 1A variable regulated psu. It has 9v, 6v, 5v settings. 5v is too low. 6v works when already running but it needs 9v to start. However the problem is that the display will still switch off if I run for a long time on 9v, so I have to switch down to 6v. Alternative, start on battery and plug in 6v works [6xAA=7.2v nominal, range: 8.5v down to 6v]. Seems some internal components of radio or psu have drifted/become faulty.

You need a positive center/hole polarity. Ideally aim at 500mA or greater replacement psu. Ideally use a variable one so it can be used for other things if your problem is different and this is not the solution. If you have an unregulated variable psu (400mA or greater) try running at 6v (will be higher but perhaps not too high) then switch to 4.5v or 5v (again will be 1.4x higher) but make sure it is set to positive centre/hole.

How do you set the alarm?

I couldn't find a manual for this model, but you might be able to get information from the manufacturer. This information is from the GE site here:

In 1987 GE sold its home electronics business to Thomson®, Inc. For a time, Thomson® produced many products that carried the GE name, but now only manufactures telephone and communications products.

The items that they support but no longer manufacture include:

  • Audio products
  • Camcorder
  • Cassette recorder
  • CD player
  • Clock radio
  • Spacemaker radio
  • Spacemaker TV
  • Television
  • Video camera
For assistance with any of these older products or your current GE telephone products please call 1-800-447-1700 in the US. In Canada, call 1-800-522-0338 (English) or 1-800-522-0445 (French).

Thomson, Inc.
PO Box 671988

Try calling the phone number listed. They might be able to supply you with a copy of the manual. Hope this helps a little. Thanks for using Fixya!
