Question about Whistler PI-1200W 1200-Watt Power Inverter Car Audio Amplifier

When i hook up my 750 watt inverter to my truck do i need to install a isolator or inline fuse? or just connect the 4 gauge battery cables directly to the battery and the inverter?

Yes, inline fuse as close to the battery as possible. If 4 gauge wire were to ground out without fuse, would most likely start a fire or at least damage other existing harnesses (depending on routing) before a person could disconnect battery.

Let us look at the math. 1250 watts at 120 volts is w=va Watts equals volts times amps. Or in this case 1250 divided by 120 volts = 10.41 amps. But what is the 12 volt side capable of drawing. 1250 watts divided by 12 volts. 104.10 amps. This is more than what the average cigarette lighter or power port can provide. So, yes you need to connect directly to the battery, you can use a relay rated for 100 A in between the inverter and battery to control the power to the inverter. I would use a good #2 copper welding cable for the power leads. Now, if you are not planning on using the whole 1250 watts, then you can use a #4 welding cable (it is very flexible) for power leads.

It sounds like the fuse that protects you cigarette lighter is blown.

After you have replaced the fuse, check the voltage again. 0.015vdc would not have powered anything that in manufactured to operate on 12vdc.

When powering anything over about 250W, I would suggest connecting directly to the battery to avoid overloading the lighter circuit.

What is it exactly that you want to accomplish? It looks like this unit is powered by the electrical system of your truck, but if it indeed can provide 2500 Watts of output power, its input demand from your truck electrical system will be in excess of 200 Amps!!! You'll need some pretty hefty wiring to support that type of demand, and I doubt if your alternator can put out that amount of current.
Are you sure you want/need to do this - and run it off your truck electrical system?

The answer is yes...BUT make sure the polarity is correct and the inverter turned off when you make the connection

Power hook up
This type of inverter has large alligator clips on it because the amperage that comes through a cigarette lighter is insufficient and can result in blown fuses and overheating of the socket. Hook this one up directly to the battery without splicing a longer wire to it.

Legend Amp hook up manual.
Pretty Straight Forward get a 8 or 4 gauge amp wiring kit.

Run your hot wire to the +12V from the battery make sure to install the supplied inline fuse near the battery don't connect to the battery until installation is complete.

Run the REM to your stereo power ant. Wire. if available.

Run the GND to Metal Chassis Ground keep it as short as possible.

Run the RCA Cable from the back of the Stereo to the RCA Inputs or Low Level on the amp.

This amp is 2 Ohm Stereo Stable which means you can connect 2 (4 ohm) speakers in parallel to each channel or 1 (4 ohm) speaker on each channel or you can connect 1 (4 ohm) Speaker in bridged mode.

There are other speaker configurations you could use but you cannot drop the load below 2 Ohm in stereo mode and no lower than 4 ohm in bridged mode.

You should use 2 red and 2 black cables, Install the inverter as close to the batteries as possible and use minimum #4ga cables #2 are better. Keep the cables as short as possible. You will need also connectors, like the ones on the truck's battery cables, attach these to both ends of each cable and crimp VERY well, connect all 4 cables to the inverter first, then the red cables at the positive battery terminals (if 4 batteries use one on each end) then the black cables to the negative posts the same way.

I have aused 1500 watt inverter no cables. what size cables do i used and what size fuse do i need at the battery?
i would not go with less than a 4 gauge cable for the + and - . atleast run a 50 amp as if you were running a big stereo system. but, you might want to consider a circuit breaker.
