Some Burning software is a bit finnicky.

Other causes might be that you are using a disk that, although it may appear unused, the disk has actually been used unsuccessfully and is now unuseable.

Other reasons might be the DVD drive itself ie age with wear and tear, driver update needed, software corruption, incorrectly added files etc etc etc.

I'll put money on the used disk issue, however miniscule this may have been. That's been my bugbear for a millenium.

Writes to 8x dvds but not 16x dvds. Why?

It could be lower quality media that the drive does not like for 16x writing. I would try a higher quality blank DVD. It could also be the software you are using. I recommend imgburn from http://www.imgburn.com/ which is a great little free app. This program is a very no nonsense burning app without the bloat of most other programs.

If you buy a single or 5 pack of high end media and use imgburn yet it still will not burn at 16x speeds I would contact Mad Dog as you may have a bad drive.

I can't write to cd unless I use Acer oftware . I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM_GSA-H60N SCSI cdrom device

Try ImgBurn. Its freeware and is guaranteed by Softpedia.com to contain no spyware, viruses, or adware. I use it all the time to burn data files to cd's, dvd's, and dvd-dl. It can also burn blu-ray. Anyway, perhaps best of all, it only takes up 2mb on your hard drive (unlike some other companies I won't mention here that can bloat your computer with over 400mb of hd space). If you don't care about making fancy covers then this should work for your computer and .

Home burned DVDs won't load, commercialy produced DVDs load OK

Try using a programme called dvd flick http://www.dvdflick.net/ to author your dvds and use imgburn http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn them. I had similar kind of problem with dvds burned with nero and now use dvd flick and imgburn all the time and have had no problems. They are both free programmes so hopefully they will sort the problem out for you :)
