I did the same as kev45.
    (I have windows xp)
I downloaded the software. Plugged the usb cord and zen into the computer. I go to start putting my music on, and it says my device isn't connected. I try all the USB ports, still nothing. I google find a site that says re-install my driver, under device manager. I do that, then it says the device is working properly, I am all like YES, finally!!!!! I open up the media player, "Your player is not connect..." Help me please!! I don't know what else to do!

  • chinoloco Dec 29, 2007

Same as all of the above. I've gone through the device manager to make sure that everything is tha way it should be and it is and I get nothing. I also checked to make sure that I had windows media player version 11 and I do. I'm stuck here

installed cd, then charged unit, have plugged unit in usb, unit won't detect unit. My usb port work fine as I use them often.

  • caz1 Jan 03, 2008

Eveything going fine, all songs uploaded and i've been using the damn thing for a year. Then i go to charge it, that's fine too everything charged up and ready to go. An hour later i think i'll add some new christmas cds to my playlist - using the same computer and usb point and usb cable that i have done since i got it,now it tells me that the device has malfunctioned and is not recognised by Windows. The advice on screen? - Plug in an alternate device. Like i have loads of these things lying around! Someone tell me how to fix this!!!

  • kev45 Jan 05, 2008

i went out and bought a coby something something or antoher till i can get mine fixed its really irritating...

  • PapiSmurf Jan 06, 2008

Yeah mine is having the exact same problem. I'll plug it in and BAM this stupid media explorer will say please connect a device. It is the same thing in WMP11.

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2008

i had the same problem but solved it, it seems that the usb driver does not always install with the software installation so you must install using the DEVICE MANAGER make sure first your mp3 player is connected, so ( copy & paste) your software to desktop, then go to CONTROL PANEL, then SYSTEM, then HARDWARE then DEVICE MANAGER, in device manager you should see ( zen v plus ) with a yellow question mark above it, which means the drivers are missing, click onto that and follow instructions to install the drivers which you will find in the software you have pasted to desktop. good luck, tony spain

  • brandyleibel Apr 13, 2008

I have the same problem except after I installed using the device manager and the computer tried to install the hardware for the Zen V Plus, I got a message saying "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software." This is my second time running the installation disc and installing! I'm so frustrated...someone please help me out.

  • zen5 May 05, 2008

Same problem as kev45 please help!!!!!

  • zen5 May 06, 2008

The solution given by jah_thess417 worked thanks amigo! zen5

  • NikiCole May 07, 2008

When my hardware update wizard comes up it goes through the steps and then tells me that there was a problem installing the hardware. So it lets me charge my ZEN but won't let me add music or anything to it. But it worked on my old computer.

  • jakeurs May 29, 2008

I have my zen v plugged in and the software downloaded and i read the zen v there but it does nothing on my computer screen.

  • nicfntn Jun 23, 2008

  • vick1215brow Sep 26, 2008

i have downloaded all the software and when i connect my zen micro to the usb cord it doesn't register that it is connected

  • Anonymous May 15, 2009

I'd just like to thank jah_thess417, what he said is right, although his method only worked after I reverted my windows media player to 10. This is a Microsoft problem though it has nothing to do with the portable devices.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

I did what jah_thess417 said but it only realized it was plugged in for about 10 seconds and then acted like i unplugged it, and said it ws disconnected.

For Windows Vista users with mp3 player Zen - see 2nd paragraph below before trying the following. Prior to my Solution I first tried to Update Driver by Search Automatically, result showed device is up to date..DID NOT FIX PROBLEM! Then I did a complete reset of my player Clean up, Format All, & Reboot only (Reload Firmware - NO), for how-to visit support.creative.com: http://support.creative.com/downloads/welcome.aspx?nDriverType=4&bLatest=1 ..still DID NOT FIX PROBLEM! Then I plugged in Creative Zen to my netbook (Acer Aspire One w/ Windows 7), usb port and connection worked properly here so I was able to download firmware from support.creative.com: http://support.creative.com/downloads/welcome.aspx?nDriverType=4&bLatest=1, Creative Zen Firmware 1.21.03/ File Name : ZEN_PCFW_L22_1_21_03.exe (for other devices click on SUPPORT at top) and I also downloaded to desktop the MP3 Recovery Tool..this time UPLOAD/ UPDATE SUCCESSFUL!!! Now, I plug the player back to my desktop but still NOT DETECTED. I then do the following...

TRY THIS FIRST BEFORE ALL OTHER ATTEMPS MENTIONED, hopefully it may save you from having to Reset to Default and lose all files - SOLUTION: Update Drivers (Important: different steps from what others has mentioned in this forum and others), to do this go to Control Panel, System and Maintenance, scroll down to Device Manager and click on Update Device Drivers, look for Portable Devices and click on the + symbol, right click on My Zen (or whatever name is listed for your player) and select Update Driver Software (you can also use the green arrow icon at top toolbar), when asked How do you want to search for driver software?, select Browse my computer for driver software, in the next box select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, in the Model box select MTP Device, installation should begin, when finished it will say Windows has finished installing the driver software for this device. If MTP Device is not listed, then try to update the firmware from another computer and retry.

I was having the same problems as all you guys, zen not detected, install driver, cant find driver etc...I finally clicked on the usb serial bus controllers in (control panel-system-hardware-device manager) and right clicked update driver for the usb.It found a driver on the c drive automatically,I rebooted, and everything worked.I noticed previously in the device manager I had 2 usb controllers (one for 2.0 and one for 1.xx).After the update it only shows one,and all my usb devices work, including the Zen!.

I am having exactly the same problem and have done a whole lot of things but nothing works..even reverted back to WMP 10. You would think with so many people having this problem, Creative would provide some kind of fix for it !!! If this does not work I am never buying any Creative products that's for sure.

I had the same problem and they only way I could fix it was to reformat my Zen Vision. To do this...hold the power button over in the on position and hit the reset twice button underneath with a safety pin. It will give you several options...the only one that worked for me is reformat. Unfortunately you will lose all your music. I did it as a last resort and now I can dock and transfer music to my Zen Vision M 30g. I also upgraded the firm ware from the creative website afterwards as a precaution. Feel free to email me if you want help doing this but its fairly easy.

Well i haVe Mayb had mii Zen fOr about 6 wEEks now. WeehN i firsT got it, iT...

One of the typical problems people run into with MP3 players is that they lose the software that came with the player and can't figure out how to get music on or off the player. So here's a quick how to. This will work with most brands of MP3 players, or even USB flash drives.

First you need to plug it in to the USB port, if you are running anything newer than windows 98 you won't need a driver. Double click on my computer and it shows up as a removable disc(usually drive letter f:), double click this drive to open it as folder. This folder will show you all directory's and files on your player, here you can delete any songs on your player by finding the file and deleteing it. From here you can also put your music onto the player by copying and pasting your music files from your hard drive. If you are not sure where your music is located you can run a search by clicking START>SEARCH>FOR FILES OR FOLDERS (if you are running XP click pictures music or video, check music then click search, each file will have it's location in small print below it's name, or you can right click each song and hit copy, then go back to f: drive and right click and hit paste, you can copy more than one). Hope this helps.

Hey Sheikhea!

You won't need to download or install any programs if you have Windows Media Player on your computer. You can use other programs but WMP is probably the easiest!

  1. Plug in your MP3 player using the USB cord (should be in box)
  2. Open WMP
  3. (If your songs are already in Library skip this step). Click "File" (top left hand corner) then "Add to Library..." Click "OK" WMP will now find all music on your computer and add it to Library.
  4. If the internet is connected WMP will attempt to find song info such as title, artist, album etc. Otherwise right click on song and click "Edit"
  5. Click on "Sync" tab (top of player). A sidebar should appear with "Creative zen.. etc" written on the top.
  6. Drag songs into sidebar.
  7. Click "Start Sync"
  8. The songs will now download onto your MP3 player.
To organise your files into folders etc. go to "My Computer" then "Creative Zen etc" then "Music" and create folders (right click "create folder") copy, paste, and drag your songs in folders as you like.

You can now unplug you MP3 player and turn it on!

Please reply so I can know if this information was helpful or not and can help you further.

Happy MP3ing!

Downloading playlist from non-internet connected computer

Yes, but you also need to load the ZEN software onto her computer so that you can add music to the player. You can load the playlist several ways, using Yahoo music, Windows Media Player, or using the Zen Media Explorer.
