I'm not sure which part of your solution worked but I ran through all the combinations, switched it off and back on again and the LCD was back on!!
Thank you.

I have received a Dimage Z6 as a gift as well and experienced the same problem. The manual page 17 (mine is Danish) says in a callout how to switch off the LCD screen - hold the flash button while pressing the I+ button until the image appears in the viewfinder (the red diode is lit).
How to get the image back to the LCD screen? Hold the flash button while you press the MENU, QV and I+ buttons sequentially. MENU - wait for the beep, then QV - wait for the beep, then press I+ until the image reappears on the LCD-screen (the red diode is lit). If the screen is in playback mode, press MENU briefly to get it on-line.
With MENU > SETUP > power save you may play with the timing. I have found out how to the LCD-screen on at POWER ON. I have to switch from the viewfinder each time.

Normally there are two reasons for the given problem.
1). Bad or defective CCD. and/or
2). shutter not working.
in
the first case the only solution is the replacement of the CCD. Please click HERE
And in
the later case sticking of shutter blade, non functioning of shutter
blade will cause the problem. This can be rectified by sending it to
some repairer.
the lcd screen has to be replaced for this and also need to checked on the main board of the camera that any other minute component on the board is damaged or got broken.
1. i am not able to view the background from LCD.
2. i tried switch DISP button on and off.
3.Rest all the functions are working fine in camera.
4.LCD is on with Blurr Screen.only thing background and captured photos cannot be viewed.
I had a A70 that would still take pictures, but the screen did not show a picture. I did some research and found that this is somewhat a common problems with some of the Canon Powershots to include the A70 where the LCD screens expire. I believe that if the camera gets too hot, such as being left in a vehicle the LCD seperates. I sent my camera to Canon and they fixed it for free. It took about 4-6 weeks to receive my camera back, and now it works perfectly. They did a great job on communicating with me, and fixing the issue. I think that alone is worth buying a Canon. The link below should help you.
There's a good possibilty that your mode switch is broken. Same thing happened to my Z6. I was able to source replacement switches, and can replace them.
Your camera works just like a film camera SLR,. You use the eyepiece
to frame and focus your picture. The LCD screen is for reviewing
pictures taken or menu operations. You cannot preview a shot on screen before it is taken with the camera.
