Fantom Titanium Hard Drive - 500GB

My Fantom External HD is not showing up in my computer directory (Vista OS) since yesterday. It has the normal blue light on. It is about a year old. In July I connected it to my new HP Pavillion 8120 and everything was working okay until this happened. I changed USP ports; re-booted both the PC and the HD; nothing works. Note: I don't usually shut down the PC nor the HD. Is this an indication that the HD is damaged? If so, can it be repaired, as I just saw an ad during this research that all USB drives/storage devices can be repaired -- just send in $40 and the damaged drive? Any ideas????

i have the Fantom Drive 500GB - 7200RPM USB 2.0 G-Force MegaDisk drive also. I awoke this morning to find my pc no longer recognizing the drive. I tried a re-boot, swapping cables, swapping pc etc. i could not be recognized. I too welocme any ideas or suggestions to troubleshoot the drive. Unfortunately, it's a 1 1/2 yrs old so out of warranty. Obviously keen to salvage the data.

You can remove the drive from the casing and connect it inside your pc, using IDE cables if its an IDE or a SATA cable, if it comes with one

Is this an inbuilt drive or an external drive? If you're using USB, it needs a USB connection. It shouldn't need drivers as the computer will automatically detect a hard drive.

Have you tried connecting to a completely different computer to see if that recognised it?

I am using Fantom Titanium 250GB External (TFDU25072B) Hard Drive i am not able to formate it i am using Windows XP Sp2 its giving me error " unable to formate " even i am not able to formate it...

The disk-drive inside the enclosure is problematic.
Open the enclosure, to get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.
Then, access Fantom's web-site, to check the warranty-status of the drive. If the warranty still is valid, they will replace it, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and transplant it into the enclosure, to "resuscitate" your device.

I have Fantom Drives Titanium 250GB i am not able

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

My mac G4 not recognize my 500GB external FantomDrive. HD light is on but Mac can't see it!

If you bought it from a friend, then ask them to reformat it for you as a FAT32 partition. Mac can not see NTFS, which most Windows users use since you get more space on the drive.

If it is brand new and your G4 isn't recognizing it, then I would return it for a new one. I don't trust things that aren't working out of the box, especially when they charge so much for things.

It sounds like some other device might have taken the drive letter that we assigned to your external hard drive. The links below will show you how to change the drive letter.

Drive not being recognized

Have you tried this in another PC with, say, WinXP? If it worked then it may be 1 of 2 problems:
1) Driver Issue- you may use a compatible driver and not necessarily a "Fantom" driver. WinME needs drivers for these devices unlike WinXP
2) The USB port is not giving enough power to the drive for it to run (a problem common in older PCs). I have an external USB harddisk that needs to use 2 USB ports in my old Dell laptop since 1 USB port can't supply the power it needs. The cable should have a dual-USB jack on one end, this is so you could use the power from the other USB port.

Hope this helps

Drive NOT being recognized by WinXP

Put your ear to the drive and verify if it is making any strange low level sounds. Check to make sure the usb connection wasnt affected. YOu wont need a driver as it appears to be hardware related. Either the enclosure or drive may be failing.
