I have a Whirlpool model LER8648LW0 that is about 8 years old. It gets a lot of use. It used to dry well, but now takes almost twice as long to dry an average load. Towels take about 1 1/2 hours on high heat. It gets hot, but doesn't seem to be as hot as it used to on high. Is it a heater element or could it be something else?

Sounds like your problem may be with the heating coil.
If you plan to try to repair the problem yourself, then the first thing you want to do is unplug the dryer from the electric.
Remove the back of the machine and try to locate the air tube going from the blower to the drum. Normally inside the air tube you will find the heating coil and the thermostats/thermistor.
Once you have located the heating coil, remove the two wires from it and check the coil with an ohm meter across the two terminals of the coil.
You should read continuity across the terminals, if not you will need to replace the coil as it is faulty.
If the coil is ok, then you want to check the thermistor/thermostats. Remove the wires and tape them together one at a time with electrical tape and turn on the machine and see if it heats up ok...if it does then replace the thermostat/thermistor that is bad.
DO NOT LEAVE THEM TAPED TOGETHER. BECAUSE THIS BY-PASSES THE SAFETY OF THE MACHINE.
Good Luck,
Hope this helps

may need drum rollers which if you are real handi and willing to take apart machine .Hard to explain how on this.Gasket in back would cut off whats falling away. It take some of the efficiency away from the drying. not hard to replace but messy. You get a gasket and this very stickey high temp glue with instructions.

Hi,

If your dryer is not drying like it once did or if you just have nottaken the time to give yourself a clean dryer in a long time then youneed to do that. At least once a year the dryer cleaning should takeplace. Lint build up in the dryer duct is one of the main causesfor your dryer to fail.

Won't dry clothes thoroughly

It could be or the moister sensor is bad. Do this first for most people never think of doing this. Disconnect the entire venting duct work. Inspect it and clean it. If you get a wad of lint every foot length from this vent this will be your problem in drying clothes. The clogged vent will not let the exhaust pass through and the moister sensor detects that and shuts off the heat automaticly

Whirlpool dryer not drying

your dryer is likely clogged up with lint .. that would be after the lint filter .. the pipe that carries the hot air out is usually completely clogged after that long .. it and the dryer itself (down inside) has to be cleaned about once a year to keep it tip top .. hopefully you can find someone that can take it apart and clean everythiing .. that should get you back to like new performance .. or you could call a few handymen to see what they would charge to clean the lint from your dryer and stack .. or if you are handy there is a special big brush with a string attached .. you pull that thru the stack to clean it .. use a vacuum cleaner to get inside the dryer vent (you can see in the vent when you take the hose off .. excessive lint buildup not only greatly reduces your dryers efficiency but is a fire hazzard as well ..
