I have an emachines computer with vista...need to restore it back to factory settings, however, i cannot find the emachines program file in my start menu...any suggestions?

Step 1:
Which operating system ?

Use an external memory device such as a DVD, flash drive or external hard drive to back up the data you need to save from your eMachines computer. Any data that isn't saved to an external source will be erased when the computer is restored to factory settings. Remove any discs that are in the optical drive and unplug the computer's peripheral devices, such as an Ethernet cable or scanner. Do not disconnect the keyboard, mouse or monitor. Click the Windows "Start" menu and choose "All Programs." Navigate to "eMachines" and choose "eMachines Recovery Management." Click the "Restore" tab. Click "Password Settings" if you have not already set a recovery password. Type a new password in the text box and click "OK." Click "Restore System to Factory Default." Type the recovery password and click "OK." Click "Next" to wipe the eMachines computer's hard drive and begin the recovery process. Select "Finish" and wait for the eMachines computer to restart. Use the series of installation prompts that appear on the screen to create a new user account for your operating system, set the system date and time, and set up your Internet settings.

reinstalling the operating system If you can run Windows...1 Click (Start), All Programs, eMachines, then click eMachines Recovery Management. eMachines Recovery Management opens. 2 Click the Restore tab, then click Restore system to factory default. The Confirm Restoration dialog box opens. 3 Follow the on-screen instructions to finish.

If you cannot run Windows...1 Restart your computer, then press the ALT+F10 keys during startup. 2 Follow the on-screen instructions to finish. IMPORTANT • • If your hard drive has failed and you can't restore the software from the hard drive or recovery discs, contact eMachines Customer Care for help. After you restore your computer, it will appear with the same files and programs it had when it shipped from the factory. You still need to download Windows updates and antivirus updates to bring your computer's software up to date.

You can click on "Start", then "All Programs", then click on "eMachines" and look for the "eMachine Recovery Management".

You will be able to select creating a Restore CD, Backup your files or just restore your computer back to when it was manufactured.

After selcting "Restore", follow the prompts and the computer will reboot and reinstall you Vista operating system.

Remember to back up your files you have created first, as they will not be saved as well as any programs you may have installed yourself.

Please follow the steps required for restore you system factory setting.

1. Click on Start and then All Programs
2. Click on the eMachines folder
3. Double click on eMachines Recovery Management.
4. It will open your recovery console.
5. In Recovery management console you have different option .( Left side menu)
6. Click on Restore. It will open the three options.

Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults - Restores the computer the factory settings, all data on the computer is removed and cannot be recovered.

Restore Operating System and Retain User Data - Restores the Operating System on the computer, files within the User accounts folders are moved to "c:\backup".
Reinstall Drivers and Applications - Launches the application used to reinstall the drivers and applications on the computer.

Which option you want to use ,click on that and follow the instruction.

You can use the Restore CD that came with the computer. The eMachines restore disk sets your PC back to factory settings with the original operating system and programs that were shipped with the computer. Doing so resolves many problems that can arise from long-term computer use, viruses, or the operating system slowing down.


1. To do a factory restore insert the restore CD then reboot the computer. When prompted, press any key to boot from the CD.


2. Select the option to "Reformat the drive to factory settings."

3. Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the operating system and original software that came with your computer.

4. Once the Restore finishes, you can re-install all the programs that you added to the computer as well as restore your files.


Reminder: Reformatting your computer erases all of your installed programs, personal documents, pictures and music. If you have the ability to, back up all of your personal data using a removable flash drive, external hard drive or DVDs before doing a Factory Restore.

The only way to restore your computer to factory setting with all the software/bloatware as it came with your computer the first day you start it up, you will need the factory restore disk that came with the computer if one is provide, if not usually with e-machine product, which doesn't provide you with a factory restore disk, you will have to create one yourself using a dvd-r. Usually you will have to go the the emachine recovery/back up management option in your menu programs and use that program to make the factory restore disk, after making that disc, you will need to insert the disc, and shuit down the computer and restart it. It will prompt you to follow direction once the factory restore disk is boot up. Follow the directions and you should be good to go. If there isn't a recovery managment program or a factory restore disk provided, you will need to contact emachine up.... usually they can send you factory restore disk for a small fee.

I guess you can try it again to make it not able to start up such as to rename some important windows file. Always a good option to backup first.

Someone tried the Alt+F10 to get that restore option, I guess it might work with your emachine too. You might like to try it while starting up the system too.

Something to try if you didn't.
(1) Go to start menu
(2) Click on all programs
(3) click on Emachine
(4) click on Emachine recovery management
(5) Click on restore on the bar across the top
(6) click on restore to system factory default

Did you try the number key while starting up or the R key or maybe with the Alt key? Hope that help.

take any of vista disk(any copy)
boot with cd in repair option get restore click.

(5) Click on restore on the bar across the top
(6) click on restore to system factory default

It takes about 20 mins.
