When UPS is shut down the lights go out on front pannel but power remains on plugs. It is coming from the AC side not the battery.

The UPS has a fauly/problem.
If your UPS is approx. 600VA, then it is not a true UPS unit but a switch over type. When the mains power fails the UPS switches over to the battery and inverter in milli-secs to provide mains power.
If you turn off the mains supply and shut down your UPS, but you are still getting mains power, then there is a fault with the switch over circuit.
You need to get this unit serviced.

So something happened to this apc and the first thing is to replace batteries...
I'm going to guess major circuit board failure.
go to apc site, download Power Chute software and pray there are useful diagnostics.

How do you connect 200897 battery, it is no longer working

I just bought a battery (readily available) for $16 and here is how I replaced it, but first, make sure UPS is disconnected from 120 Volt service. (Old battery number SW1233 with F connectors.)

Turn the UPS over and look for 1 tiny screw (even with the "in" telephone wire socket). Remove the screw (turn CCW). Push the button marked push, then slip a steak knife or sharp putty knife into the joint in front of the screw hole. Twist the tool enough to start the battery cover moving backward (to your left).

The battery is upside down. Lift it high enough to grab wires and pull them off the postst.

Verify battery you bought fits the housing. With UPS upside down, place battery on right side with lugs toward the power cable. Push red wire onto red post. Hold the battery upside over UPS. Push black wire onto black post.

Visually ensure the wires both run in their channels (otherwise the battery will not seat and the cover won't slide on.) Push battery into slot until it bottoms.

When the battery is bottomed properly, hold the cover about 2/3's over the battery housing, push it down, then push it toward the screw hole (to your right). If this operation, or the cover jams near the screw hole, check the battery. It must be absolutely bottomed in the slot. The cover won't go on easily even when everything is perfectly aligned.

After the cover is closed and the screw replaced, plug the UPS into a wall socket. The on/off button has a mind of its own, so ignore it. The green light may light and there is one beep. The backup yellow light may blink. The green light may stay solidly on. Pull the cord plug out of the wall. Now the UPS green light may go out and you will hear a ratcheting sound (the UPS is making AC from the 12 Volt battery current). Because you have no device plugged into a "battery-backup" plug, the UPS will shut off automatically in a few minutes.

The last test is to reconnect the plug to the wall service, then plug a monitor, a music system, or something similar into a Battery B/U connector. The green light should light. When the UPS is again unplugged, the yellow light (Backup) flashes and there is a repeating beep. Plug UPS back in. Only the green light will be on. That's it, all done.

I use Newpoint UPS to back up my telephone/modem. During a brownout, SPS powers those units almost 2 hours.

Note: This UPS is not suitable for powering or charging Laptops because the power output is too dirty.

I hit the button to turn it on it will stay on for awhile and then it will start beeping really loudly an shut off

With your UPS turned off, unplug your PC and all other devices from the unit. Then turn the UPS on. If it still beeps and shuts off your UPS internal battery may need to be replaced or you have an internal UPS failure. Look for a red "battery alarm" light on the front of your UPS.

If the UPS does not shut down with all devices disconnected from it, Power off your monitor and look on the back of the monitor for a label which will tell you the amount of power it requires (probably 100 watts or less). Plug the monitor's AC power cord into your UPS and turn on your PC and monitor. With the UPS plugged into the AC line you are not using the internal battery and the UPS should remain on and your monitor should be working. If it shuts down you have an internal problem with the UPS.

Now unplug your UPS from the AC line (simulating a power failure) Your UPS is rated at 350 watts. Accordingly it should easily support the 100 watt load of your monitor. If the UPS continues to provide power to the monitor for 1 or 2 minutes down it's an indication that it's working properly and the COMBINED LOAD of your monitor. PC etc. when plugged into the UPS is exceeding the 350 watt capacity of the UPS. You will have to disconnect 1 or more devices from the UPS.

NOTE: Never plug a laser printer into an UPS.

If the UPS immeadiately shuts down after disconnecting it from the AC line with only the monitor plugged into it you have a bad battery.

hello

shut down computer - unplug power cord from laptop - remove the battery from laptop - plug Ac adapter into computer and Ac outlet (wall)
turn on computer
if computer does not turn on, replace the AC adapter and cord - then place battery back into computer
plug in new Ac adapter and cord - recharge battery - if orange light stays on after 4-6 hours of charging battery, you need new battery as well - replace battery, charge it up and it should be fine

if you have attempted these steps before and no change occurs, then you may have issue with power connection in computer - locate a service centre to replace power connection on computer

If the AC green LED on the front panel does not light when plugged in the AC input Fuse may be blown. In the bottom of the AC Supply socket is a fuse that can be pulled out and replaced. There is a spare fuse in the square of the rectangular fuse holder

Suddenly everything lost power and the CPS1100AVR UPS unit started beeping and clicking while switching back-and-forth from 'powered' to 'battery'. Everything connected powered off, then on, then off,

Most UPS's will check the voltage of the battery periodically when the UPS is running and all is well with the AC power. If the test returns a "fail" on the voltage of the battery, many UPS's will start acting strange. It sounds like this may be the case with yours. The batteries can be changed by removing the access door on the bottom of the unit. A phillip screw holds it in.
