Rainbow e2 system. Will not power up

I have a e2 Rainbow system. It's been sitting in the garage for a couple years and I pulled it out today and tried to run it and nothing happens/ no power/ nothing. The water basin is missing. Will this prevent it from starting or is there a reset button or is there something more seriously wrong? I do not want to order a replacement water container if the problem is deeper than this.

Is there a trick to taking the unit apart?

  • Anonymous Oct 12, 2009

The yellow wheel underneath the unit does spin freely. Is it something as simple as the unit will not run without that water basin?

The water basin has a safety on it so the unit cannot run without it. if you look on the bottom of the rainbow you can see a small oval shaped space that you can depress just to test and see if it still runs it will only run with this depressed.

What happened is this. the motor is seized, all you need to do is take the machine apart and move the impeller left to right until it starts to move freely

  • Anonymous Oct 12, 2009

you may not have to take it apart. turn the unit upside down and you will see a round wheel that should move freely .. if it doesnt, rotate it back and forth until it does ... let me know if this works

Rainbow e2 type 12 120v , accidentally plugged into 220v, would barely power up, possibly controller board defective?

probably need both as the extra 100 volts would burn the board and the motor
it is never advisable to buy electric equipment from another country because of the voltage differences but even then the plugs are made different so that the cord will not plug directly into the power outlet.

My rainbow E2 will run on High speed, but not the low speed.it's as if no power is getting to it,when.you try to switch it on low,but works fine on high

This could be one of two problems. It could be your switch is broken, preventing it from going to low speed. Try clicking it, does it still make a distinctive click sound, does it feel loose? If so it may be your switch: Rainbow e2 power switch
Otherwise if may be your computer in your E2 is starting to go bad. Often times if Rainbow stops going into one of the speeds it is due to a computer going bad. This is an expensive part and repair, so you should probably take it in and make sure it is the computer. Rainbow E2 controller 120v

Looking for replacement component for motor controller board, a capacitor that is in series with the AC input line.

Unfortunately Rainbow does not offer this part by itself, they only make the computer as a complete assembly. Rainbow E2 controller 120v You can try contacting local vacuum shops and see if they have any broken Rainbows with good controllers that they would be willing to sell only that part to you.

I have just installed travertine floors in my entire house. What's the best vacuume for my floors?

If you have mostly hard floors you can't go wrong with a Miele canister vacuum. They have many models out. I would suggest one with a 14" horse hair floor brush. they are german made and last for years. Don't buy a Dyson they are very harsh on hard floors and your carpet.

Vacum works on low but not on high??????

I hate to tell you, but your computer is most likely the problem, and is out on your E2 two speed vacuum.

The only solution is to get a new computer for it.

It is realy not worth replacing it, because it may also be the motor. The E2 is a very high tec system, and is not like any other hacuum. When you turn it on, you are not turning on the vacuum. You are turning on the computer, which is controling everything.

I could supply you with another canister, if you are interested.

No power

You must have a late model 2006 or newer E2 two speed Rainbow vacuum that has the white foam padding in the canister, to dampen the sound of the motor, and has a red light on the computer board.

Rainbow E2 2 speed vacuum motor whines at startup

I used to sell rainbow vacuums and this latest 2 speed model does whine when it is first turned on. So you definately have nothing to worry about. I believe this is due to the fact that this motor is much more powerful than in the previous 1 speed E series model. I finally just purchased a 2 speed model after many many years of wanting one. Good luck to ya and enjoy your clean house!

E2 gold series - makes loud noise on start up

That is normal. All E2 two speed Rainbows make that sound. It is because it has a brushless motor that the computer is controling, and the computer is controling everything. The motor rotor has no coils on it on the rotor, which is very small and light, and the computer gives it a small power boost when you first turn on, then increases the power until ir reaches full speed.
