Uniden gns8350 wont turn on

what do you have your unit hooked to too power up straight off the battery or thru a power switch if thru a switch hook it straight to bettery

If its showing a white battery with a cross then its not charging. Try using the car charger and see if it shows a battery without the cross.

it does have an internal battery, but that normally wont prevent it
from turning on unless the battery is defective.

plug it in to the usb cable on your computer for a while (normally it will start right up) then slide to power switch to the on position for about ten seconds.

if that fails, press and hold the lower right corner of the screen and then slide the power switch to the on position while holding the lower right corner of the screen and follow the directions once it starts

i can give you something else to try before you go and spend money on a battery...a battery should be the last thing to do, even though it will more often then not fix the problem thats tempory..

if it turns out you think you need a battery, i will point you to one with instructions on how to change it.

I have had a similiar problem with my Trax 430. The screen freezes at the system shut down stage. I have to plug it into the computer via the USB cable. It then recognizes the computer and attempts to do an USB update. Then just unplug it. It should work but not a practical solution when you are driving about.

Dead Battery? That makes no sense at all. He mentioned he was running it off the battery - " I was able to plug it in to a computer and unplug and was able to use it on the battery. Once I unplug and use it on battery, the only way I can power it off is by pressing the Reset button on the back."

The fact of the matter is that there is a well known issue with Nuvi 350 Power switch. I haven't taken mine apart yet (also bad power switch), but most likely the switch is defective or the solder joints are broken.
