Sounds like it's the ribbon cable, a common problem on n96's. Replacing this should fix the problem.

Try to reflash the phone first and see the result.If still not ok,you should change the flex cable. If the problem still the same,change the lcd

There is one of the following problems with your phone.

• LCD of your phone disconnected from the connector inside the casing.
• LCD had been damaged and need to replace by a new LCD.
  

You have to check that your LCD is connected to the buttons strip from inside of your phone by opening its front casing. If it is in the strip connector, then you ave to change your LCD as your LCD had been over to show any thing.
