Hi My hard drive crashed can it is old can it be

Hi My hard drive crashed, it is old can it be fixed or do I need to get a new hard drive? It is a Dell 4600i Dimensions desktop BIOS version A10. It seems that my computer cannot find the hard drive. This is the message:

SATA Primary drive 0 hot foud
SATA Secondary drive 0 not found
Primary drive 0 not found
Primary drive 1 not found

It can read the CD Rom Drive. I cannot go beyond the Setup Screen. Thank you Susan

Most likely scenario is the drive is dead, but also the BIOS on your computer is old itself, I believe there are a few BIOS upgrades available for that model, might want to check with Dell support site. If you have access to another computer, there is a way to check your drive. Go to a computer retail store or on Ebay, but a EIDE/SATA to USB adapter. This will allow you to take a hard drive out of the case and attach this adpter to it and plug the usb side into another computer, laptop, doesn't matter...that computer will read the drive as an external hard drive....if the drive is indeed still viable. If it is, this would be a good time to save your files to the other computer for safe keeping until you can get your other system back on its feet.

Sad news - crashed means broken.
Some shops (like Best Buy and others) have a means of kick starting some failed hard drives once (or twice at the most) - then copying the data onto another hard drive. Check your area (by phone or Google) for a computer hard drive data recovery resource. Do not attempt to start it yourself - or everything will be lost forever.

Good luck and let us know your results.

Files from a back up

You should be able to plug the external hard drive into the new computer and restore. Generally the drivers needed to access the external driver are on the external drive itself. The operating system will detect the hard drive (if it has plug-and-play services running). If the new computer fails to see the external drive, check the cable and download the driver manually from the manufacture's website. If the drive is recognized by the operating system, but you do not see a prompt to restore from the backup, you may need to locate a setup program on the external hard drive to start the restore process.

How to fix a bad hard drive.

If you have a hard drive that crashed and can't live with the thought of starting over .. there is one last thing you can do to get your info from the disk!!

FREEZE IT... YES.. i said to put your comp. hard drive in the freezer...

First you need a ESD bag (antistatic bag) You are going to need a new hard drive anyways. When you get your new hard drive. it will come with a ESD bag over it..

Put the old hard drive in the bag...
Put the new drive in your comp.
Put the hard drive in the freezer over night..
24hours in the freezer = about 30mins run time... might get more time out of it if you freeze it longer but ... you will just have to test it

put the hard drive in and test it... if it works ( like it should ) you can use the old hard drive as a backup and keep freezing it to get the info off.

You can open the case and on the mother board there will be a name of the mfg. go to the mfg of the mother boards website and see if they offer any software to repair your
harddrive.

Hard drive not working

Hi,
Unfortunately this is a very specialized field and the sounds you describe are those of a hard drive which has hardware damage.
It will most likely cost you less to buy new hard drives than having the old ones repaired.
