When I print a document with color, the color, especially red tones are very blurry. I've tried to clean, calibrate, restore defaults, put in brand new print cartridges -- and it is still blurry. Black prints perfectly clear. Any suggestions??

If your going to print in color may it be just red or blue. You really need all of the cartridges for it to work. Because for the printer to come up with those colors. It would need all three colors Cyan, Magenta and Yellow to come up with the any color, in your problem, Blue and Red.
Using the REPORTS MENU print the "color supplies status". Make sure everything is good. Select SYSTEM SETUP. Select PRINT QUALITY. Select CALIBRATE COLOR. Select CALIBRATE NOW. Check the Transfer Belt(ETB) which is inside the front door. Make sure that it is free of your "racing stripes". You can use HP TOOLBOX to troubleshoot. You are using HP cartridges???
Faded prints are possible due to following reasons.
1. Fogged red mirrors inside the Laser box 2. Alignment of the Laser Box 3. Calibration Problem 4. Cleaning Problem
I will guide you with simple steps first, if this dosen't work working with laser box is little tough & time consuming, hence will describe later.
To Calibrate the colors, Press the 'Green Button' in the front panel, use the arrow keys to navigate through menu.
Select 'System Setting' by pressing the green button again, navigate using the arrow keys and select the 'Calibrate Color', select green button to select and confirm to 'Calibrate Now'. This will take few minutes.
In addition to that, to clean the paper path, select the green button and use the arrow keys and navigate thru' menu and select 'Service'. select using the green button and navigate through menu and select cleaning option. This will take few minutes.
Try printing some documents and check whether you have fixed. If you have not got the original print quality, Let know to guide you more technically.
If this is magenta being weak (light) on all the things you print (try doing a test pritn, and a configuration page from the printers own menu system). this will be the dirty laser lens/mirrors problem that is very common with this printer.
Solution is either
Dismantle (it IS quite a lot of work, but fairly straightforward methodical screwdriver work) the printer to remove the laser unit. Take cover off the laser unit and CAREFULLY clean the lenses and mirrors. NOTE take care not to disturb the alignment of any part of the laser optics, and be especially careful with the mirrors as they are surface silvered and V easily scratched.
You can find NEW laser units on a certain internet auction site, and also (genuinely) refurbished exchange printers. Both of these two opttions will obviously save time and effort, but be more expensive.
According to HP if the problem is only when you print from your PC or Mac then you need to reinstall the printer driver. If the problem is also when you print just from the printer, i.e. scanning or test page, then the problem is with the printer.
It would more likely be the transfer belt then the fuser. Try doing the calibration 3 times in a row and see if that helps.
Press Select (Swoosh) Use arrows to go to Print Quality Press Select (Swoosh) Use arrows to go to Calibrate Color Press Select (Swoosh) Use arrows to go to Calibrate Now Press Select (Swoosh) Press Select to Confirm Calibrate Now
If you are sure the diagnostics show the colours correctly, one thing I would look at is to see if it had a colour profile set
up for it.Don't know whether this printer normally has, if it has not I would suggest reinstalling the driver. To check - Start/Printers & Faxes/ Rt click on printer then properties, look under Colour management tab.
